Not meaning to detract from your point, which my own life experiences confirm as valid, I can't help but add a smart Azz thought that popped up in my ADD brain as I read this.

I'm willing to bet you didn't attempt any "spirited discussions" in the "hood".

Maisie, I really enjoyed reading a little about your life and your personal experience with racism. I wonder how or if we will ever see the end of racism. I wish there was something concrete we could do. .

My mother never saw skin color, and she raised me the same way. I went to boarding school in the 60's, and we were all from different backgrounds and races, we didn't see skin color, neither did the nuns. Our small school would take field trips, and on one of them we got to go to the zoo. I was eleven years old and my friend Felicia was 10, she was also black. As we sat eating lunch away from our group of girls we were attacked by a group of black HS students from a public school. Why? There was no reason for it.

Racism is taught, it is passed down to the next generation and the hate continues to grow. Now we have so called reverends such as Sharpton and Jackson who do nothing but preach hate and racism. When will it end, when we've all killed each other off?

Gay men? Now you know you can't be that discriminatory. You mist include lesbians as well.

Seriously though I lived in a similar neighborhood only in my case everyone was Hispanic and I was the only blond for block as well as the only woman with a college education and.a career. It took a while but I became part of the crowd, got to perfect my Spanish and learn to cook some great Mexican food. I was known for all of my dogs, cats, fish and other critters and became the go to person for anyone with sick or stray animals.

I really enjoyed this post, Maisie. I love getting to know more about the members here and it's the first time that I felt like I got a glimpse into your life. There will always be racists unfortunately. When I meet someone, their race is irrelevant. It's how they are as people that count.
