The Rainbow Village

What happens when a filthy and gloomy run-down slum in central Java, Indonesia receives a dazzling makeover?

It turns into an internet sensation and a tourist spot overnight!

Yes, my readers, I am telling about the hamlet now dubbed as “the rainbow village” located on a hillside above a river that used to be a typical low income Indonesian neighborhood.

The rainbow village has now become a hot spot for Instagram shots and some of the pictures shot there have gone viral too.

Those who are interested to see some of these photos can see them below.

Happy Viewing!

brightsmile.... thanks for stopping by and for the comments left here on my blog page. I appreciate. The idea of painting all the 390 houses of the village in bright colors came from the local junior high school principal Slamet Widodo. What a wonderful idea!

The village has by now been turned into a tourist spot. The project was reportedly inspired by at least 3 other towns in the country that adopted similar paint jobs. It has since been reported that" the investments made in revamping the former slum are sure to pay off, as local businesses are already seeing a rise in souvenir and food sales, according to the Indonesian Builders Association"
Thank you so much MySeek for stopping by and for your comments. I appreciate!

At first, my thoughts were "Wow, what a change a new coat of paint can make!"
Then I wondered if it is just a quick fix to a more underlying problems. I hope it will lift the spirits of the people of the village and they will continue on with the improvements..... if allowed to just deteriorate, it will look worse than before.
For myself, it is too much color, but I have noticed in pictures from your and some other's pictures that bright colors are very prominent in that part of the world.
I appreciate you sharing these things. Thank you.

You need not worry Mrs. Joe. It does not appear to be a quick fix. The Indonesian Government has financed the project. The residents of the village have since decided to undertake the cleaning of the nearby river. They have already completed filling the village with art. The village is now a tourist spot attracting influx of large numbers of visitors that has led to a jump in local food and souvenir sales, benefiting the local economy. Thanks for liking the blog. Stay well and cheerful always.

Nice renovation in comparison to what it was and looked before. These too bright colors really camouflage well such a dense habitation, as long as it fits them. Thanks for the blog. Enjoy your day MBN.

MLD...The village has actually transformed itself into an extremely impressive display of bright colors and fanciful design. The amazing makeover cost the community over $22k provided by the government. Whatever may be the cost, the residents have successfully shaken off the Village’s status as a degraded slum. I am happy to see that you have liked the blog. Thanks for your meaningful comments left on the page. By the by, may I tell that I have forgotten long before how to enjoy a wet day! Take care, MLD and stay always cheerful.
