The Fallacy of Privatization

There are those, most often among conservatives, who would have us believe that privatization of industry and infrastructure is the best way forward. However, upon examination, that hardly proves to be true.

These people would have us believe that privatization of education is preferable to government provided schools. Let us examine that for a moment. Does it make sense that we would totally scrap our existing schools and have some corporation build new schools without the costs being passed on to us the taxpayers?

There is no Santa Clause. Corporations do not operate with the good of the public in mind. They never have and they never will. Their primary objective is to increase shareholder profits. The well being of the public at large and shareholder profits are mutually exclusive. Anyone who believes otherwise is deluded at best.

We have only to examine the proliferation of private prisons to see the effects of privatization. Prisoner care is compromised. Security is compromised with attending increases in escapes. The cost of these "new" prisons is passed on to the taxpayer.

The following graphic explains the difference privatization brings to bear.
