People who think in binary terms

A recent blog in which I was named is just the latest example of a person thinking in binary terms.

A person thinking in binary terms considers only two possibilities. If you aren't for"up" then you must be for "down". If you aren't for "Donald Trump" then you must be for "Hillary Clinton". That sort of thinking is commonly considered "splitting" by people in the mental health community. If you are for "Black" then you must be against "white". Most reasonable intelligent and mature individuals recognize the fallacy of "black and white" thinking. But then we have others who engage in it on this site.

Those who think in binary terms are seemingly incapable of recognizing nuances; mid points between two extremes. In addition they are seemingly incapable of considering alternatives outside of the only two alternatives they envision.

This sort of thinking is the mark of an uneducated person. A person who has not developed in the maturation process. We often observe this is a person who is prone to bigotry and racism.

There is another aspect to the antics of a person who thinks in binary terms. By proposing only two alternatives the person constructs the parameters of a discussion. That behavior then becomes a manipulative behavior. In this context we often name such an individual a "control freak".
