Latest school shooting The gunfire at the U in Arizona demonstrates why more guns are needed on campus. Someone clearly felt in grave danger, and responded appropriately. I hope Leafy and the others who oppose second amendment rights will now see the error of their ways. |

Rentier, I can't believe I just read this...what happened to your blog? lulu, makes some inane statement and the whole things goes to pot. in fact, I wish I had gone to pot instead! Butt alas..I do not have a pot to piss in! I got a rope..any takers?

No, I am just stating that it is no longer our mission. I can't see Putin defending women's rights but he doesn't appear to be afraid when it comes to defending the near-Godless version of Christianity acceptable in Russian culture. Fossil It's a civil war. You just got out of the civil war in Aghanistan. Why go into another one?

I don't know that it is a question of "rights." Now we have forfeited the role of leadership and handed the keys to the Russians. A paradigm change was bound to happen with and inept leader like Obama. Fossil

Fossil: Don't others have the same rights to try to change your laws and culture as your nation does? Isn't that what bringing democracy and women's rights, among other things, to the poor benighted heathens is all about? The Brits once had that role, and the then the US took over after the UK lost its empire.

The point is that your culture and laws are not the same as my culture and laws. Why do you feel that you have any right to change mine? Just because the Islamic hoards are taking over your country doesn't mean they we be as welcomed here. Just because you are afraid of firearms doesn't mean that I have to be. Just because you choose to be a wimp doesn't mean I have to be one too. There is NOTHING superior to your way of life versus mine. There are no opportunities there that we don't have here. We have more than 325 million people here and you probably have about 1/6th of that number. Of course we will have more crimes. In fact, statistically, we should have about six times as many murders, robberies, etc. Anyway, tough guy, Ian Fleming would probably be pissed that a bleeding whining pacifist chose a name from one of his brave characters.  Fossil I will take your points one by one just to give you an idea how to go about it- and I will not resort to calling you names . 1. I have made no effort to change your culture - just commented that an awful lot of people are being appear to be getting shot every day in your country . According to your logic that should not happen as you have so many guns there everyone should be safe from such outcomes. Please explain to me why that happens if you can. 2. I do not fear any Islamic hordes as I know that the population of the EU is 500 million people and there are only 19 million Muslims in this population (3.8  . Hardly hordes. Am I to be afraid of Mr Akram who run the local store and his sons who I helped to educate? Maybe I should be cowering in fear before the wrath of Mr and Mrs Krishna when I take their children to chess matches or they go to my wife's cub scouts? The Mohammed family who escaped from Afghanistan perhaps? Or Prakesh from the Punjab with whom my wife played tennis? Riaz who played cricket with me or Mrs Safraz who was Miss Houseman and married a Muslim - maybe she is a suicide bomber in disguise? 3. I am not afraid of firearms - I do not even think about them ; I never see them. Firearms do not impinge on my life in any way at all and if you think I am a wimp because I am not afraid of ravening Muslim hordes and I do not need to hide behind a gun then go ahead - I think anyone who needs to prove his masculinity by owning a weapon must be lacking somewhere. It is not the 19th century and you are not Buffalo Bill. 4. We have 1/5th of the population of the USA (you were close) but we do not have anywhere near 1/5th as many murders as you do. We have less than 1/25th as many.(less than 500 in the UK each year ; more than 13,000 in the USA) The EU has a population of 500 million and still has only 5000 homicides compared to the USA with 13,000 (not counting the 1000 shot and killed by your police) The EU and UK are 5-6 times safer than the USA How can that possibly be? We have so few guns by comparison so we must be in danger of being murdered in our beds at any moment -- but we are not and we are not afraid of that happening. It would appear that in the countries where they do not have guns the citizens are safer than the country where they do? Explain that away I challenge you. 5. 'Tough guy', 'wimp' and 'bleeding whining pacifist' -- make your mind up. Your terminology is somewhat confused. For your information I am not a pacifist but I do not threaten anyone with violence. In my experience that is usually the tactic of the one who has to hide behind a weapon. Bravery is not found in the barrel of a gun. Your posturing and name calling do not impress me, and neither does the fact that you own a gun. So what have you got left -'tough guy' lol ? As you seem bereft of logical points to back up your bluster I will wait for more invective from you - which I will, once more, ignore until I get a cogent argument - but I will not hold my breath. I do not intend wasting more of my time talking to a closed mind so if you want a reply to your next tirade you may have to wait. I may just find it too boring to bother with.

Do you think I give a shit what your homicide rates are in the great European Union? Your murder rate will soon exceed ours by a comfortable margin. Know why? They are coming for your ass and you will be fighting them off with broomsticks and fireplace tools. So, sit there all smug and confident because your homicide rates per thousand yada yada bullshit and see how much fun it is in about ten years, if you haven't been murdered by then. Maybe our cops are better shots than yours. Fossil Our cops are not armed. They do not need to be and they do not want to be. We do not live in a society which is so afraid of its own shadow that it must perennially resort to carrying weapons for its own protection. In fact British cops who are licensed to carry weapons when they apply to a senior officer to do so and the situation is deemed to warrant it , are much better shots than your 'cowboy' police. They do not shoot off their weapons at the first opportunity and they do not kill people indiscriminately .

Maybe we are gun-happy. Maybe we just feel safer with our guns around. We choose to enjoy the freedoms you don't have and obviously don't understand. The good news is that pricks like you don't get to dictate policy to us. I'm trying to remember that quaint English expression...oh yes, Piss Off. Fossil Freedom is a word you simply do not understand I see. Freedom from fear is the greatest freedom a human being can have. You are riddled with fear and need a gun for 'protection' - I have nothing to fear and I do not need a gun to protect me. What is there about that which is beyond your comprehension? There are no guns on campuses in Germany, France, Australia, UK, Spain, New Zealand (I could go on and name another 20 developed countries but you get my drift I am sure)- there has not been a mass shooting at a school in any of these countries since 1997. It would appear that the crazies do not respond to their 'open invitation' to go 'shooting fish in a barrel' in any other country than the gun obsessed USA. Discuss.

Yes Roxy, because the recent college shootings have proved that "Gun Free Zones" are safe, right? But on your other point, since I have visited the UT campus in Austin a few times, I agree. There are far too many "spaced out" students to allow for open-carry on campus there - or in Austin, period. Say, is that infamous tower still there? Charles Whitman, right back in the sixties? Surely you remember, Roxy. How many did he kill? 14, I think and wounded another 32. Here is the catcher. He didn't have an "assault rifle." It wasn't an AR-15 with a high capacity magazine either. It was a Remington 700, bolt action, single shot rifle with a 3 round internal magazine. Before heading to the tower he killed his mother and his wife. The gun didn't kill those people - Whitman did. Tell me how banning assault rifles or high capacity magazines would have changed the outcome. Liberal logic continues to baffle me.  Fossil If arming the people with more guns makes a country safer why is it that there are 10,000 gun related homicides in the USA every year and only 500 in the European Union? The EU has over 500 million population; USA has 317 million. Total homicides per year in the USA total 13,000; total homicides per year in the EU total 5,000. Strip out homicides carried out by guns and the USA number drops to 3,000 the EU number to 4,500. These are almost comparable when adjusted for population the ONLY significant difference is the number of homicides in the USA which are carried out with guns. Now tell me how more guns makes a place safer.

I suppose you mean "law enforcement officers" when you say "police." I also assume that a fair share of those "someones" who were shot might have been endangering the lives of others, threatening law enforcement or committing some other crime. Michael Brown comes to mind. Fossil In a time when violent crime has fallen by over 30% in the USA why are so many people being shot and killed by the people who are supposed to serve and protect them?
