Ottawa incident

As someone who lived in Montreal when the FLQ was kidnapping and killing people, as well as planting bombs in mailboxes, I find some of the reaction to the shooting on Parliament Hill excessive.

Some journalists, politicians, and members of the public have short memories.

Worse things have happened in Canada in my lifetime here.

In the mid-90's a gunman killed three and wounded a dozen others in the Quebec legislature.

Then there were the 14 dead women at Montreal's Ecole Polytechnique.

Stevie Harper, our Prime Minister, calls this terrorism.

I see it as lone nutter who lost it.

Stevie is using this, as is his wont, to advance his right wing ideology.

The FLQ activity in Quebec in the late 60's into 1970 was terrorism.
This is not.

You forgot to mention that in recent history the KKK has become the "enforcement" step child of the conservatives in the US. How else are republicans going to save face when they discriminate against blacks?
No prominent conservative groups today endorse the KKK.

I'm sure you may find some occasional loonies in any group, conservatives or liberals. But as a practical matter, such an accusation goes well beyond the maliciousness and/or ignorance of gross over-generalization. Not only is this a vile accusation, it's a boldface lie which you cannot back up.

GBU,

Gavin

Learned another piece of info this morning, Oct 24.
The gun used was a Winchester 30-30.
This has an eight round mag, and the lever has to be worked to load the next shot. To reload the mag, the cartridges have to be inserted one at a time.
Not exactly a good weapon for a terrorist bent on mass slaughter.
This explains why early reports said he was carrying a shotgun.
The mag in this weapon is a tube beneath the barrel, so a quick glance might mistake it for an over-and-under shotgun.

They don't know how he got the gun.
In Canada you need a FAC (Firearms Acquisition Certificate) to buy a rifle or ammunition.
If he applied for a FAC he should not have passed the background check.
If the gun is traced back to an owner, someone is going to be in trouble.

The more info that comes out about this guy, the less believable the terrorist label becomes.

He was doing drugs and living in a homeless shelter in Ottawa/

Does that sound like an ISIS setup?

Terrrorism usually involves the furtherance of an ideology as its motivation. There is no indication that this person was a part of a concerted effort to advance an ideology.

This Canadian incident could best be compared to incidents in the US like the Texas and Virginia university shootings.
In the current zeitgeist any crime committed by a Muslim is automatically tossed in the terrorism slot.

Perhaps we should do that with Christian crime.

I agree.

Let these whackos go over and get killed, but it should be made plain to them before they go over what they can expect if they try to come back.

The ones who survive and try to return to Canada can be watched.

Thank you for that iron clad argument.
