Too Old?

The past few months I did a lot of physical work I actually thought I was too old for. That behind me I’m on to the next phase of taking care of the business of cleaning up the family real estate situation. It’s unusual and complex and all though I am the one taking care of things (because I have the time and ability) I am the only one involved who does not stand to lose something if things don’t work out. It’s a time of intense pressure and enormous responsibility.

This past week I have had a couple of people imply, either directly or indirectly, that I am taking on far too much for someone “my age”. Seems that once we hit 65 or so we are supposed to check our mental and physical abilities at the door and find irrelevant activities to amuse us while we wait to die. I admit that I was thrilled to leave the structure of working for others behind even way sooner than 65 but I am not done yet. Just doing business on my own terms, my way and on my time schedule.

Last night I was hit with the irony of the idea that people our age are done. I realized that Donald Trump is the same age as I am and Hillary only 2 about 18 months younger and here they are fighting for the top job in the country. The winner will perform as a world leader, make decisions that affect everyone and have the authority to launch nuclear weapons.

So explain to me then how I am too old to buy and sell average residential properties and administer a puny little educational trust fund..

There were 12 men who retired the same day with me. At the retirement party I ask each one of them what they were going to do as each of them were younger than I. Each one responded, "I am not going to do anything, drink beer and watch TV.

This was the year of 2002. They were all deceased by the year 2010. I have people often asking me why I am still working. I will continue to do what I can as long as I can.

"Use it or lose it" applies to both mental and physical capabilities. We may slowly lose some of our capabilities anyway, or they be taken by a major occurrence, but we cannot just sit down and give up. You just keep on doing whatever you are doing......... it is working for you.
As for your age? Why should that be a gauge for capabilities? It sure isn't in politics, as evidenced by our Congress!

How one ages depends a lot on luck, commitment to staying fit, and mental attitude.

I was in Montreal recently and walked to the top of Mount Royal, which is 233 metres above sea level. I think Montreal itself is at 90 metres, so it was about a climb of 150 metres or so.

When I grew up in Montreal, climbing to the top of Mount Royal where the big cross is was considered a strenuous undertaking.

After hiking in the Rockies, summiting Mt Adams, and other similar activities, Mount Royal was cakewalk.

Glad I'm lucky.

You are as old as you feel, and on some days I feel OLDER than I do on others. But I just take the bad days with the good and get on with living.

WOW Rentier, I doubt I wouldn't be all tuckered out walking to the top of Mount Royal (used to bike up there too at one time)! WTG

I knew this little lady who kept going until the day she died, she was 96. She not only took care of her property, but her cattle and chickens as well. Then to top that, she was up every morning at 3 AM making tortillas which she sold at her roadside stand. I swear, they were the best tortillas I have ever tasted! People would drive for miles and buy a couple dozen at a time. Trini was an inspiration to me and I miss the conversations we used to have. So old? Nah, that's only a state of mind.

Interesting how people like yo and I never saw another option. I love the bit about your mother. She should be the role model for all of us.,

Land rich and cash poor is a great concise way to put it. I think I will use this one when I need / want to explain..

I think in my case it will have to be taken from me. I do have considerable concerns about how I will deal with that.

I guess I am just too ornery to do what I am tole by anyone. This past 6 months has taught me not to take anyone's word for anything, to just try it then decide for myself. I have surprised myself a time or 2 lately.

Part of it is luck, part genetics, part lifestyle and part attitude. As I said to other's I'm ornery enough to push tie limits until the very end.

I do what you mean. Some days I too feel older than others. Those are the times when I have to push harder when I need to get things done. What I do do in deference to aging is to allow myself more days off. For example today I took a day off and we went to Santa Barbara for a sea food dinner on the pier watching the boats come in and out, although I did have to take time out for a couple of phone calls. Tomorrow it will be back at it to check on the pool and

That is so how I want to be - keep going until it's time to end it all then just go. I know it seldom works out that way. None the less I am staying positive.
