Terrorism Fatigue

I read an interesting article today about terrorism’s greatest threat not being the terrorist but a situation it labels as terrorist fatigue.

To summarize the premise of this article is that if we listen, read, watch etc. media coverage we are bombarded with replay after replay of the gruesome details. It becomes routine and we find ourselves shrugging off the events in Istanbul or Orlando because they affect people outside of our comfort zones. As we shut down we focus on events that affect us personally and stop feeling any empathy for victims who are in distant places, from other cultures or other ideologies.

It further states that post 9/11 an undercurrent of fear has become our reality. Along with desensitization to victims plight this results in lack of government interventions unless there is political support for them. This leads to people getting fed up with discussion which in turn leads to reactions and interventions that address the symptoms rather than the underlying issues.

Definitely food for thought. when I consider my personal reactions about the only one I agree with is being fed up with the discussions. I suppose you could say I have become somewhat desensitized becasue I tend to lump the discussion part of the event reporting into political bickering which I despise anyway. I tend to wait for written articles that I can read and hopefully extract the facts from the propaganda. On the other hand I find myself identifying more and more with the plight of the victims. Most of them are just people going about their daily routines who just happen to be in the wrong place and their families and loved ones who's lives are forever disrupted.

I was wondering about that myself but just assumed I was missing something since I am not all that up to speed on politics.

I don't shrug off the event but I certainly get what you're suggesting regarding replay after replay of gruesome details. I prefer the print media for news over television anyway. Every time there is a terrorist attack it just drives home the point of the absolute disaster it has been with the Israeli occupation of land they flat out have stolen. This is where it all came from. No other theory has an ounce of credibility.
I don't see the connection to that particular aspect of middle east politics and our emotional burn out here in the US. Matters not who started it, how or why. It is something we all have to deal with as a current reality.

True about war always being televised . Now, when anything happens it's 24/7 repeat, repeat and repeat. Use to be it was relegated to an hour or so of news for the day. We would catch up on the basics facts then move on unless it was something we could do anything about.

If I were a conspiracy theorist I might conclude that our current "news" reporting 24 / 7 is a form of government (or big business as there is little difference) brainwashing.
