Does Anyone Really Care?

Responding to another blog I finally verbalized why I tend to avoid political and religious blogs. Does anyone really care what others think or feel about these topics unless it agrees with their views on the subjects? Based on how people respond to each other it is obvious (at least to me) that people posting on those topics are seeking an avenue to express their opinions often for the purpose to aggravating others. The reasoning behind this conclusion is obvious.

Respondents who disagree are usually subjected to insults. Even the insults become repetitious and predictable. If I made the effort I could likely create fairy accurate imitations of how various people will respond.

That leaves me with my reason for not responding. It is not that many of the topics are not in areas of my concern. Many are even dear to my heart. But, like someone who keeps running into the same wall why waste my energy and effort? My responses usually express the thoughts the post brings to my mind but when it comes to politics and religion it is obvious no one really cares what I think unless I parrot their views, hence why bother?

That being said I am off to work with one of my residents on organizing her "stuff". Minutia in the grand scheem of things but at least my efforts produce something.

I think the great amount of aggression displayed by some SFF members in their blogs and comments is the reason we have lost so many long time members recently. Speaking personally, I just avoid making comments to the aggressors on their blogs, or in reply to their comments.

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

Sad but true, Spirit. It is unfortunate since the purpose of a blog should be to hear different points of view that may alter our perception of things. Valid points should have the potential to lead to altering our opinions. Oh well. It won't happen here.

That covers my reasons for not responding to some as well. Like you I have strong convictions and have no problem stating them as long as others respect them. In the " real" world most do which leads to some interesting sharing and conversation. However the intent on both ends is to understand each other better, not to win an argument, convince or convert.

Of course we post blogs to state our opinions - it is the purpose of blogging, isn't it? Sometimes my opinions and those of others don't jive and that's the way it is in real-life too. I may not like some of the replies but unless they are intended to insult me or other readers I am generally civil and respectful. I thought I have always treated you this way, even though we tend to differ in many ways.

Then we have blogs like Leafy's whose sole intent is generally to stir up trouble and antagonize just a handful of people. Most of us don't read his blogs these days, a fact which can easily be verified by looking at the numbers of views he gets. I think by now, most people realize he is just the alter-ego of another blogger.

You have always been respectful of my position from day one. While you can be quite sarcastic I have never seen you make an effort to be insulting or offensive. Not easy to do since we all have people who take offense just because we are. Yes, we are different on many ways but differences are what keeps life interesting.

Yup, I only read the ones that might say something they didn't say yesterday.

Goes back to one of my main difficulties in school. I usually got it the first time and got really bored hearing it repeated many times. Then my creative mind wandered and I got in trouble for rotating attention.

Exactly my point. Why bother?

I like the idea of you sharing it in a read only blog. I am intrigued as I know it had to be something significant.

I'm not likely to change my bottom line but differing opinions offers good insight not the various individuals. They also provide clarification and food for thought.

Block the hateful ones from seeing it...unless you think I am one of them.

Then the person you blocked writes an entire blog addressing the fact about how you and an evil mean crazy person because you darned to disagree no matter how politely. I had that happen to me even when the issue had nothing to do with them nor were they addressed either in the blog or responses. However I would not hesitate to respond to unnecessary hostility in the same way. The issue was simply that I disagreed with them and others who had aligned with them.

I tend to think the expression 'empty vessels make the most noise' carries some weight (regardless of topic at hand).

I enjoy religious topics and express my views, I only respond negatively to individuals who attack and abuse rather than discuss. Mostly I dont resond to them at all, just ignore them and avoid any interaction with them. Simple.

Judgment Day will be interesting - and all paths lead there.

I certainly 'care' if only in the sense that the opinions of others, whether they are based on fact or not, interest me.

I am fascinated by how people manage to have strong beliefs despite all evidence to the contrary.

Government run, single payor health care systems come to mind as one example.

I was taught the same, although my grandmother was one of 11 siblings who often had Sunday dinner together. Half were republicans, half democrats and all were Italian. Talk about people getting excited.

As for what is going on here - same old stuff. Agitators bating and insulting others and people taking the bait. The usual hot buttons - religion and politics deteriorating into stupid stuff like looks, area they live in etc. They get really mean, juvenile and absurd. I stay away from it.

We have lost a significant number of the old timers here and few have come forward to replace them. No doubt becasue the nonsense makes us all look pretty undesirable.

I stick around for the discipline of blogging to maintain my written skills and for the rest of the folks who present some interesting things.

in the scheme of things spirit, your question only reinforces my feelings that many are making "America hate again". to care and respect your thoughts and others is a fundamental element of civilization, and it has been disappearing, becoming extinct along with this ongoing planetary extinction. it isn't my imagination, you see it everywhere, hate is growing, respect seems to be losing. if we don't start caring, history charts the path.
I agree about hate being promoted these days. Respect has been dead for some time and we have reverted back to behaving like little kids on the playground.
