An Answer

As I sit here on line while on vacation I just may have figured out an answer to a question I have seen asked here. I can’t remember the blogs, the persons or the times but more than once the question has been asked and probably more often thought “Why would anyone spend time on line when they are on vacation?” I’m doing it and here is the answer I came up with – at least for me.

Like many of us I’m beyond the age when anything in life is a 24/7 party. Most of us have to live with declining physical abilities and are having to deal with accepting our limits. Even if we can still do many physically demanding things it is not a good idea to do them. I love the thought of zip lining through the jungle but know my arthritic joints would not tolerate the landing so well and with osteoporosis I need to avoid things that put me at additional risk for fractures. . Take today for example. I spent about 4 hours swimming in the ocean, lounging on the beach, reading, exercising in a warm therapy pool and sunning. That was my limit. When I was in my 20’s I did this from sun up to sunset but no longer. Now I get stiff from sitting and tired from walking or swimming and reluctantly admit that I get bored and irritated with my limits on more extreme physical activity. After a break for a shower it was catch the bus into town where I walked around, looked at things in a couple of shops I liked, had a pleasant but light dinner and a couple of drinks at an ocean front restaurant, walked the local equivalent of the board walk (about 2 miles), took the bus back to the hotel and relaxed for a while before having desert. I’m not interested in clubbing and my arthritic body certainly can’t dance the night away. It’s time to unwind before being able to go to sleep and that is when I catch up on line.

On line is the new way we share our activities. We used to send post cards and take lots of photos to show people when we got home. I post on line or send an occasional e-mail to people not in one of my on line communities. I send or post pictures I think people might be interested in rather than wait until I get home and inundate and bore people with every detail. These days our “community” and “family” are usually connected at some point in the cyber world. We are not doing anything different than we ever did, just using a different vehicle to do it.

We keep important people in our lives updated. In the “good old days” I would call in to family, friends, house sitters etc, regularly to monitor how things were going and let them know I was OK. It’s even more important I check in these days as my worry about me since they know I follow my intuition and do things that they see as unpredictable and / or dangerous. No need to find a phone, coordinate schedules or pay big fees to be in touch. When I was in my 20’s my mother, who was afraid of absolutely anything beyond her limited comfort zone, worried so much when I was off an adventure and needed constant reassurance I was OK. I frequently found myself needing to find a local Western Union or it’s equivalent to send her a telegram. That took a bigger chunk out of my time that a simple post on FB.

Taking care of business. With all of the things I have to manage for my and the others in my residence facility I am able to pretty much take care of things, business wise at least on line. Before the Internet I would have had to spend a lot of planning making arrangements for things to happen in my absence and would have needed my sister or another person to do a lot of running around for me.

A relative even sold her house while she was in Europe. Everything was done on line and documents were sent and returned via overnight currier services.

I am sure there are other good reasons for staying “connected” while traveling or on vacation but these are what came to mind.

As said many many times on Family Feud "good answer", I agree with you for sure.

Even the way you composed this posting has a relaxed feeling to it, thanks for a good one Spirit.

As you well know, I don't live in my home country, but I do keep in touch with my family and friends over there by using the internet. It makes the whole operation so simple.

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

Does anyone remember the times when friends or relatives would go away on vacation and take literally hundreds of photos onto slide film.

When they come home you would be invited to a slide show evening at their home where you would be shown every minute detail and scenery from every possible angle with your proud hosts boasting about the good time they had.. What a boring evening. A good reason to drink excessively.

You soon learned excuses to escape this misery hopefully without upsetting your friends and relatives feelings.

Those times have past with digital cameras these days but "selfies" on the cell phone or posted on FB can be equally as boring.

Definitely. Not having to host or participate is one of the advantages of using social media. It's easy to ignore what you don't want to participate in and also incredibly liberating not to have to get dressed and go to someone's house to see what you are interested in.

Thank you. A good story is easy for me to tell. Just wish I could do as well with fiction.

Thank you. No plans to leave blogs anytime soon. Sometimes I post more often than others, probably becasue I usually post when things I feel like sharing come to mind. Sometimes I just have nothing to say. And I am the first to admit that I am pretty unpredictable.

Another example of what we have talked about before - being difficult for those of us who spent a lifetime being physically active accepting our limitations. The good news is that we are still able to do things many can't.

It really does make keeping up with the people in our lives easier.

You and Alfie would love it here but you have to let go of the diet thing. I do that every time I am here and fro whatever reason I still maintain my weight or even loose a couple of pounds in spite of eating lots of stuff I normally don't.

I have a hard time being even mildly passive when it comes to physical activity. The brain still wants to play like a child but the body says no.
