Censorship Software In Action

Participating in discussion of the recently disappearing blogs reminded me of a situation we had at work when the “censorship” software first became popular. There had been a recent a problem with a couple of guys coming in at night and using the work computers to view their porn. These guys pushed all of the limits. One of them was even living in the parking lot in his RV.

One day I tried to log onto the CDC main site. I as working for the Public Health Department and accessed the CDC frequently. This particular day I got a message that it was a forbidden site. The reason was reported to be pornography. As the day progressed some of the other staff found themselves blocked from some of their frequent used medical sites.

I reported the problem to IT who had no idea why we were having this problem. I asked them if they recently began using censorship software. They had. I suggested that they check it’s settings. Sure enough the problem was that it was set to deny access to sites based on them containing certain words. Guess what? Medical sites and porno sites often identify body parts using the same words.

I can’t remember if they solved the problem by giving us a higher level of clearance for our computers on an individual basis or found another way of identifying true porno sites.

I first became aware of SFF in 1999 because my IT guy came to me and told me someone had been accessing the site on our government network at the Department of Commerce. I then had the unpleasant task of firing one of my Field Operations Supervisors for her crime. She was my Mom and Dad's next door neighbor and never said another word about it to me.

One of the hardest things I had to do in my career was fire people. I can't imagine having to fire someone with a personal connection as well.

If the "bot" is a censorship program like I described it is set to identify and act on certain words. It would not detect an incorrect spelling of the word.

I think the woman's reactions give us a picture of why she was fired in the first place. No doubt her attitude carried over into all aspects of her life.

I was once assigned an employee accused of malingering with the instructions to follow the document and fire procedure. When I started working with this woman it was obvious to me that she was not malingering and truly had some serious health issues. Long story but in the end one of my more assertive staff took her to the ER where she was a frequent flyer when she had one of her disabling headaches and refused to leave with just the usual medication and release. Turns out the woman had a pituitary tumor.

I had to let some people go as well and it is indeed very difficult. I did everything I could to try and prevent it. A lot of people unfortunately get to a point where they believe they are immune from responsibility. The one thing I never put up with though was a drinker or people who use foul language. When you hire someone you often have a sense of these things, but its imperfect at best. Many prospective employees believe their previous employers will give good recommendations, the truth is that employers are more honest than employees realize.
And then people do change both emotionally and physically and may not be the same person they were when you hired them. Drinking and cussing on the job are usually frowned upon everywhere
