Real Belgium Waffles

We are all familiar with the American version of Belgium.waffles. Good and one of my favorite breakfast foods, however they are not the same as real Belgium waffles from Belgium. Chuck and I have been looking for them for years. I had them over 50 years ago at the New York World's fair. He got them from street vendors while on a job in Belgium. I found some recipes for the real deal (they are made from yeast dough rather than batter) but haven't made any yet. I am kind of unmotivated when it comes to breakfast and they take a day of advanced planning for preparation.

Today we went to Venice CA, a place that is often seen in movies and TV shows. It is interesting to people watch there but like so many things it is way over rated. . After last week in Provence Town and other Cape Cod places it was almost a joke but kind of put my "coast to coast" background in perspective. We decided to drive back up the coast taking us through Santa Monica. Parked along the beach was a food truck advertising real Belgium waffles. The challenge was to find a parking space close enough not to have to take a taxi or bus to the location. I thought "This is nuts. We are trying to do the impossible to track down a food truck for something we have not had in forever and it may not even be the real deal." The waffles proved to be quite authentic and came the closest to any so far.

The things we do for food and how spoiled we are being able to go to such lengths for something so trivial. Another of those little reminders to be thankful for all we have and all we take for granted.

I'm not into Waffles or Pancakes, Spirit, but I do really enjoy some well made crepes. English pancakes are more like crepes than American pancakes are.

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

They are eaten a variety of ways. The most popular is dusted with powder sugar and eaten like a pretzel. I like fruit with mine. They are not fried but come out sort of like that. While they sound similar they are not like the squaw bread or fried bread that I think you call elephant ears. In any event they blew my diet for the day, something I did not need as I just got rid of the 5 pounds ob bloat and water from over eating while in New England. Can't win - as I told my sister "so much good food and so little dietary tolerance."

I love crepes too. Back in the late 70's they were really popular and there were even chains of crepe fast food vendors at the malls. Then disappeared from all but full restaurant menus. Lately they seem to be making a bit of a come back and have been able to get them like fast food here and there and of course in Puerto Vallarta. Amazing, isn't it how we manage to "eat our way" around the world.

Yes, you are describing what Chuck made his regular breakfast form street vendors when he worked in Belgium. I found and have the recipes and even ordered the sugar lumps that are used in some recipes on line. Just need the motivation to cook them.

Me too. I even settle for the frozen ones from Costco. They aren't authentic but aren't bad and so easy to prepare. Just pop it in the toaster and when done pile lots of berries on it, add a little berry syrup and I'm good to go.

Just thinking about it makes me want to jump on a plane.
