Fighting City Hall - Second Round

The big time political sparing goes on in the war of words. Mean while on the local level my puny little personal battle with city hall continues. After getting nowhere and much tail chasing trying to get the “expert” certifications the city requested as a result of their most recent inspection to my house I decided to go DIY. I read the city regulations and my made the changes we thought would satisfy them. Then I requested a meeting with the inspector and the code compliance officer to discuss them. Armed with photos and my ’s technical input we presented our case.

Now I know none of you will believe this of our government but there were a couple of points the 2 officials disagreed on between themselves! They admitted that this was a problem they deal with – different interpretations of things and that “regs” aside nothing on the lists presented a health or safety hazard anyway.

OMG – our tax dollars fast at work. My conclusion is that the code compliance officer is a redundant and unnecessary position probably developed to accommodate a top heavy administration. Different only in terminology out here in the canyon. When we went through cut backs a couple of years ago they eliminated the position of chicken inspector, which also appeared to be redundant. Call it what you want but it still appears to be bloated administrative positions.

I think I made progress. Got everything in writing (in simple English) via a “special” permit. Once a couple of minor things are done all we need to do (hopefully) is have the inspector come out with permit in hand and to go through point by point and verify.

2 months and about $500 after the initial situation the end may be in sight – until the next issue.

Like I have said so often, "The words Politician and Honesty do not belong in the same sentence." They are just after getting their hands in your pockets.

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

You are correct. As I stated in my blog, they all agreed that my piddle little things are not a safety hazard. They are definitely in it for the money, at least in my city. Now out here? we really miss that chicken inspector. My soup hasn't been the same.
