Don't Blame the Coffee Maker

My usual news reads this morning left me completely disgusted with our slanted media reporting - on both sides of the aisle. You'd think the articles were written by some of us rather than professionals. Now wait. We would do a better job.

The first was an article about single serve coffee makers leading to creating environmental pollution / waste etc. While this is true due to the way they are used it does not need to be this way. Single serve coffee makers are a wonderful invention, particularly for households of 1 - 2 people. They cut down on waste becasue we only make what we use. The problem lies with our throw away society.

Reusable cup are readily available ranging from very inexpensive ones from "as seen on TV" to high tech ones that cost as much each as 3 multi packs of the less expensive ones. But - go to any place that sells the makers / cups and you have to search for the reusable ones. Initially I had to order them on line.

Chuck had a single serve coffee maker when I arrived and was using disposable cups. A releasable element came with the maker but this was not all that user friendly. I did some research and found the easier to use ones we now have. Three years of keeping crap out of the landfills and all it takes is a bit of rinsing out. The less expensive ones last for over a year. I have yet to have one of the more costly ones break. Best of all I got to continue using my favorite coffees.

I still have my back up stove top peculator for camping and power failures. No way would anyone want me dealing with a disaster if I don't get my coffee first.

As usual it's not the object but our selfish, wasteful, throw away lifestyle that creates the situation then diverts the blame.

I think Ann just uses the metal filter with a paper liner and the coffee tastes really GREAT to me! I used to do the same when I lived alone and the grounds can just go into the compost.

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

Inhale a French press as well but my coffee cools too much for me.

I spread the used grounds around my gardens and plants.

Single serve coffee makers are a waste.
The only advantage is convenience, when they work.
The coffee they make is marginal at best.

I see some have adopted the more sensible approach - the French press.

Certainly it's more work.

There are double-walled French presses that keep coffee hot longer.

Thank you both of my Canadian friends. We often forget that coffee and how and when we drink it is a cultural thing. I like tea and used to drink it in the afternoons and evenings but somehow switched to deadly diet drinks. If I were to work on eliminating a habit that would be it.

I'll have to check out the double walled models. I use the french press method when I am at my sisters, mostly for convenience becasue she makes ultra strong coffee in giant pots. I keep a french press there for use when I visit.

I switch from carbonated junk to tea in the afternoon and evenings in the cooler weather, When my husband was alive we always kept a pitcher of iced green tea on hand but I got out of the habit after he passed and my schedule became so unpredictable.
