Photo Monday - Ghost Town

Almost

This is an abandoned lumber mill near where we went camping a few weeks ago. I remember going there years ago when it was truly a ghost town. Homes were left with furniture in them, the office still had papers sitting out etc. It was posted and supposedly off limits but my husband had grown up in the area so took us on a stroll down memory lane anyway. He reminisced about his father working there a couple of seasons when he was a . I don't know how or when things went bust but the company just left one day. .

Sometime in the past 15 years it was cleaned up and opened to visitors. Although there is no curator etc. people are welcome to visit and take a look. The grands enjoyed seeing how life was back in great, great granddad's day.

I always enjoy going to places like this to see what it was like back then.

Very interesting. I wonder why they left their homes with furniture.

That does sound messy. I remember huge sawdust piles at the local mill when I was a kid but I don't remember them burning it. I remember my grandfather getting a dump truck load of it from time to time to use as a mulch type cover for plants in the winter so most likely all of the sawdust was used for that or other purposes.

It was most interesting before it was cleaned up. Everything just left like the people had just been vaporized or something.

That sounds interesting and spooky at the same time.

Hard to say. Perhaps the homes and every thing in them belonged to the "company" and were provided fr workers. This was common pre 1930 depression era. Many companies went bankrupt during the depression and just left everything behind. My grandparents had purchased an old lime processing plant and 300 acres for back taxes. . The worker housing as long gone but parts remained like the kilns, blacksmith shop and office. I remember going into the office and playing with paperwork and other things in the desk. My grandparents used the old kilns to house farm equipment during the off season.

Probably so. It is pretty rugged country almost 50 miles from any size city. The little towns around the area do not even have any graffiti. Most people who live in the area were born and raised there and have an usual (for these days) respect for property and the land.

Thank you. It is a pretty awesome area, a bit too rugged for many but awesome.

Nice shots, I love exploring old buildings. There are so many memories in them, which I'd love to know about.

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

One of the things I always loved when we visited relatives in NM.

I love imagining what life there must have been like when the towns were active.
