There Are Other Reasons

Like life. Some are "taking a break" from blogs. I want a break from life, or at least life in what we call civilization. While I share the same dissatisfaction with the quality of this blog community lately that others have become fed up enough to leave over this, is not my main reason for not giving blogs much attention. We are in the process of some renovations at my house in town. It didn't start out that way but one thing lead to another and a simple fix became a nightmare.

Take a 100 year old house in a setting where the policy is total waste resulting in a practice of tare down and replace every 30 years or so, several owners before me all of whom did their own repairs and changes, A few projects started by my and ever changing city codes over the past 100 years and you get the picture. I can neither afford, want nor believe in doing more than needs to be done so it becomes a matter of doing what needs doing so we can fix the back laundry room.

My can do the "labor" but his disabilities prevent him from being able to stay on task. If he gets too much input he shuts down and does not come out of his room for a couple of days. He can't handle and deviations such as the electrician not showing up on time and gets into arguments with them. The end result is that the electrician resigns and I can't blame them. Service provider leaves and retreats to room for another couple of days.

It is almost impossible to get crafts persons who will take on small or unusual projects. City says they have to have licenses, both business and professional and insurance coverage. They want their certifications of the work done on company letterhead. That rules out "Joe the Plumber", a small independent person who I prefer in the first place for a number of reasons. So much is required of businesses in terms of expenses, union negotiated salaries, taxes, city fees etc. that they need to charge astronomical fees for the small inspection job (that is when you can find a company who will provide the service).

But the best is yet to come. The city clearly stated what they wanted in a letter. The electrician says that is not how it works. He says get the permit, have city inspector come out and tell us what needs to be done, do it, then have the inspector come back. The city says no, have the work inspected by a person who meets their criteria do the inspection and certify in the manner they want. Can't get clarification from the city because Saturday is a holiday and other than having someone to man the phones to tell us everyone else is gone until the 9th everyone is on vacation.

On the bright side the plumbing went a bit better. Nothing needed other than capping off an old clean out a few feet further down the line. I'm not sure what difference that makes but whatever, it's an easy fix. We'll do it, bury it for now then when the city is done dig it back up and put something removable over it so we can get to it if needed.

The worst part is that I need to be there to work with the "professionals". I tried to have me do it but as Dr. Phil says "And how is that working out?" The electrical inspection thing kept me there most of the past 2 days.

In the meantime, in my absence, Chuck decided that he wants to sell this place and move. That sounds OK but he has no idea where he wants to go to. A sale will require "staging". May not sound like much to most but when half of the house is basically my studio and work area so it means moving most of my stuff out and not being able to "work" when I am here. It means covering all of my bright colors and taking done my personal touches which are everywhere. It also means living in the bland, neat, personality less environment that real estate agents want.

Not much I can do except remind him that I warned him when I came here what having my home base around entails and start planning for as a smooth transition as possible. Then after my big east coast family get together I will begin the process of moving my work materials back to the residence house so I can work from there and packing up and storing all of my custom creations. On a positive note this means that I will be at my house to deal with the issues of getting things done but by then (time estimate within the next year) I will be on the premiss more and won't have to take a couple of hours out of the day for commuting.

Oh.n the meantime I am putting together my nephew's wedding ceremony which will take place when the family gathers in late August. More bureaucracy. MA requires wedding officiants not MA residents to apply for a temporary credential from them that has to be done no sooner than 6 weeks before the ceremony.

I am so sick of bureaucracy and silly rules. If my family weren't here I would definitely be reactivating my plan to move to Mexico.

Exactly- and you don't even live in CA which has more restrictions and attempts at control than any other states. Liberals want to save us from our selves and conservatives want to free us leaving me, the consumer and you, the provider, unable to get the job done. Meanwhile the self appointed royalty takes a 2 week vacation at our expense.

Hope it isn't Joe's health needs. I too have experienced how things change when you try to follow up as an out patient. It's so difficult for us and we know how to navigate the system. I often wonder what happens to people who have no background in health care etc.

Amazing how the work of the project is nothing compared to the BS you have to go through to make it legal. Maybe we should all get together and rebel. Nothing like an army of old women on tractors and bull dozers waving hammers and other tools.

spirit.... living in Mexico is pretty great... of course depending on where.... I lived on the Baja peninsula for almost 4 yrs and loved it although I got horribly homesick for family, friends and lifestyle here, but have to say that I have toyed with the idea of moving back to Mexico!! If I did, I would go to Ensenada or another border town so I could easily go into CA for medical care.... Good Luck with your decisions
My choice is Puerto Vallarta. I lived there for the better part of a year in 2010. Like you I missed family and friends but got back every month or so. I was planning to move there permanently but plans fell through literally the night before I was going to leave one of the times. My tentative plans were to regroup and make a new plan for the move but life got in the way.

Life is so much simpler there. Example my current situation with making electrical improvements. Their attitude is that go ahead. If you art stupid enough to electrocute yourself that is up to you. If you burn your house down it is your loss and responsibility. Yes, people do harm themselves out of ignorance but big brother is off your back and I'll take that any say.

My money also goes much farther there. I can afford to live far more comfortably on far less.
