Update On My "Cat Meds"

A few weeks ago I wrote a post about waking up one morning and getting out of bed with nothing hurting. I had just started adding the human version of a supplement prescribed for cats with arthritis to my "cocktail". I seized the opportunity to catch up on heavy yard work I had not been able to do in about 6 months. Even my doctor friend warned me that I was creating a disaster and that like everything else I tried this too would stop working after a few weeks like everything else. My response was that if it did it did but in the moment I was not hurting and the work needed doing. I would deal with later when later got here.

I am happy to report that my pain is still considerable less. I managed to get all yards and gardens in shape. My hip / leg pain is mostly gone. My back is still painful but nothing that I can't deal with. I can walk for several hours without leg and hip pain! I do take about 5 kinds of herbs but it is worth it. I could likely eliminate some of them but hesitate as I like not hurting.

Needless to say I am extremely happy about this. The past few days I have even begun to work on getting my endurance back to where it was last fall.

My problem isn't arthritis, but it does give similar pains. I get the occasional attack of Gout and believe me, it can be very painful. My doctor prescribed Colcrys, which does work and give relief, but the prescriptions are very expensive. We found a compounding pharmacy nearby and they made me capsules containing the main ingredient of Colcrys, which is Colchicine, for a much, much lower price. I am now one happy guy.

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

That's awesome Spirit! Isn't it amazing that a drug made for an animal works on people as well?

I knew a lady that would take a drug for pain that was made for horses. Heck, it worked, so why not?

Great news. I have a friend who has been getting the injections on his knees for a few years. Unfortunately he is not as lucky as you and has to do so often.

Good to hear from you.

Love the joke. Kind of how I feel. My right knee has a good excuse, multiple injuries, but the left hip and back have no special excuses. Never thought it's live long enough to wear things out!

Gout is actually an arthritic disease and seems to be one of the more painful ones.

With the way pharmaceutical companies extort us these days we have to look for alternatives. Compounding pharmacies are becoming a good alternative as are many natural alternatives.

There was some adjustment but not as much as it would seem. Cats have a much higher metabolic rate so require the same or higher does than we humans with some things like antibiotics. They can not process any Of the non steroid pain relievers humans use and respond differently steroids so you have to be careful.

The names are a bit different but the human version is cosiquin DX. I also take about 5 anti inflammatory herbal. It's been a long haul as this started acting up about a year and a half ago when I spent a couple of days on NYC running up and down subway stairs.

Now that it hurts less I will be hitting the exercise hard to attempt to build my strength back up to it's pre NYC level.

I take in the information and recommendations of my doctors and usually give them a try unless I see a compelling reason not to. However I don't limit it to the formal medical community. I give other options consideration and try them as well. When docs are comfortable being honest they will tell you that medicine does not have cut and dry answers and involves trying different treatments until they find the one that works for you. A good doctor will start with the most likely to succeed, monitor the results and go from there.

So far so good. I figure that even if it is only temporary it is really helping me get through this question season's heavy work demands.

Several years ago I read an article written by a woman vet about a treatment she used for her horse, her dog and her mother. Everyone was doing well.
