Explain Yourself - Or Not

This is an excerpt from something I read earlier today. The article is lengthy and discusses a number of things people are made to feel they must explain. The topic is something we all need to remember when we are challenged by people who are not entitled to an explanation.

Have you ever thought about how many people live their lives following someone else's rules, explaining and justifying their decisions and actions to people who have nothing to do with their personal affairs? Have you ever thought that you might be among those people?

“What I was trying to do was…”
“No, no, what I meant was…”
“I actually wanted to…”
“Just let me explain….”

You will never be able to please everyone. Stop wasting all this energy to do so. The only people worth explaining yourself to are your friends and family. But if they are as close to you as you think, they probably get you, sometimes better than you get yourself. So if you need to give someone an explanation, go ahead. But if you only do it because you feel obliged to, you’d better cut it off.

I really like the thought that our friends and family often understand us before we understand us. Very true in my case.

This is so true.

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

Definitely. Maybe some residual from the bygone days of male dominance. I'm a klutz so frequently choose to apologize because it is usually me that invades another's space, spills something, looses things or trips over my own feet.

Explaining what and why I do things comes hard for me since I operate on intuition not logic. I explain when I have to but don't unless I have to. I can still see a former supervisor fed faced with frustration telling me " You make me crazy. I never know where you are or what you are doing but I have to let you do it because you always come through."

Definitely. The hardest part for me has been getting over feeling guilty about cutting it off. One of the co benefits of blogging on sff for me is regular need to practice my skills ins this area.

Sometimes some folks deliberately pretend to misunderstand. Reasons vary depending on their attitude and what they are trying to accomplish or imply. Maybe humor, or twisting the truth, or trying to negate you?

I do apologize if I feel I've inadvertently hurt someone's feelings.

I've been doing this for years. The hardest part was realizing how important their feedback is because it is so true that they often know me better than I know myself. I still hear my sister saying "OK, now you are obsessing" when I would dig in with the typical ADD hyper focus. Very helpful.

Yup - I have an ex who used to do that just to lure me into a word game and that is why he is an ex.

We all do or should do that.

Always good to clarify that what we are stating is opinion, not fact. Unfortunately there are some who can not distinguish between the 2.

And those who are not close enough to warrant an explanation are often the ones who demand it most.
