Torn Between Progress and Familiarity

I have been working with only my tablet for the past month. It is a full
Windows tablet but I never completely adjusted to the touch screen instead of mouse, an extremely overactive auto correct and a virtual keyboard. My laptop developed a problem before I went to Mexico but since I was taking only the tablet anyway (much smaller and less expensive should something happen to it) I didn't do anything done with the laptop.

After we came back Chuck set about fixing it. Turned out to be more of a job than he anticipated since this was the first with both a SATA drive and a hard drive he had worked on. Got it back together but the sound didn't work. Took it apart again to fix that then had problems getting it to recognize one of the drives.

Finally, last night it was finished. The keyboard is a bit more sensitive than it was, but probably because it was well cleaned. Other than that it works like it always did - but now I find myself tapping the screen and wondering why nothing is happening! Reminds me of the shift from DOS keystrokes to Windows and a mouse and going between the systems between work and home computer and before that from moving dictation and the magic of the word processing department to computer. Makes me feel so old.

Ha, how things have changed, huh? Now you have me thinking about things like the old Kaypro computers, now I am feeling old.

Reminds me of the song "Oh the times they are a changin". Things change rapidly and some like it and others not. I'm fine with technology coming up with new and wonderful things. Some people dislike that. I guess it's my computer background.

The reality is there are things we must learn, like it or not, if we want to do certain basic things. We love our microwave ovens, PVRs, cell phones and more. You'll get used to shifting between your tablet and laptop. Personally I prefer my desktop to my tablet and laptop but each has their advantages and disadvantages.

I an so old I learned to type in junior high on an old manual Underwood. We had one just like it at home. When I started college I got one of the first portable electric typewriters. By the time graduated I had had a temporary office job. They had IMB selectrics. If you remember them they had balls.

The tablet amazing for how small it is and all it does. I am not a left brained person so am challenged by all gadgets. I use them all but it takes me longer to learn and I forget the details quickly so if it's more than a couple of months between using a function I forget it.

I haven't a desk top in years. I had a lap top for the last several years I worked because my work kept my job took me out in the field most of the time. On the personal side I haven't lived in a place where I had enough space to set one up in the past 15 years and that is not counting the couple of years I spent traveling.

Don't feel bad. The same happens with all of us. When we do something regularly, we remember. If there are big lapses of time, we forget. The trick is to take notes on something that you know you won't be using for awhile. It's a pain to do but it helps the learning curve when you go back to it.

I have been fortunate to have had a resident computer technician since we first had home computes. My husband was an IT manager engineer. We always had the latest and greatest. Next my son in law who was in college majoring in computer science lived with me, then a BF who was an electrical engineer and now Chuck who's only interests in life have been computers airplanes. Good thing I am both not interested and not very good at technical stuff.

I have always kept up with the latest smart phones, although the feature I like best on mine is the slot machine games I downloaded.

Reading your and mrsjoe's comments realized that the think I least use my phone for is talking. Kids all text so I learned. Texting actually works best with my son because I don't have to listen to him go on and on.

I don't bother with tablets and I'm still using a desktop. The only time I feel the need to go on the net is when I'm home, so it suits my needs.

I only have this desktop computer and a small cell phone. That is enough for me.

I used my desktops for editing pictures, my IPad mini for calling my children. I rarely use my cell phone for taking pictures.

One can't always updates of this technologies because are expensive.

Exactly why I got the tablet - airports and travel. I agree about replace every couple of years. That is if mine survives that long. I always joke that I should be hired by cell phone companies to test their equipment. If my phone makes it through a 2 year contract before it has to be replaced it is indeed a tough one. So far I have only had one that made it that far. The rest? Well one tried to go swimming, one tried to sky dive out of my purse one too many times, one tried to wash the dishes, one tired to change a tire...............

I wish it were that for me but even when I travel I often need to take care of business. I could do everything from my smart phone but the screen and keys are just to small.

It's been longer than I can remember since I have had room for a desktop.

I seem to use devices for their secondary purpose. Like you I use the tablet for phone calls (far better than paying for international calls). I haven't carried an actual camera in a couple of years and my criteria for my latest phone was which one had the best camera. I don't keep grocery lists or to do lists in paper. They are all on my phone. That pretty much eliminates my frequent forgetting the list or leaving it in the car.

You are correct about upgrading being too expensive. Chuck has 3 - 4 desk tops that are 5 - 10 years old. All are for different purposes and as long as they do what he needs they don't get replaced. My husband needed to be familiar with all the current stuff for his job so we always had the newest stuff. Drove me crazy because I no sooner had one figured out by the time it was replaced, upgraded or used as an experiment.

In my case I manage to break things or mine have serious problems and it is less expensive to replace than repair.

Mine too but in my case that isn't saying a whole lot for the phone.

I just upgraded to iPhone 6 and love it-- and my iPad-- haven't used a desktop or lap for yrs
i have been sticking with windows and an android phone because I know those systems and am too lazy to learn a new one. Someone gave us a MacMini small desk top a couple of months ago. It's set up and I keep telling myself to learn how to use it but so far it just sits.
