If You Have Had Enough of Snow

I know many are suffering through winter. It's winter in CA too but it's a bit different here. We don't get snow but we do have seasonal weeds! Green things grow like crazy becasue it rains. Even though this year's rains have not been enough so far to alleviate the drought they are enough to make stuff sprout.

For me this means regular yard work. When I was chopping my jungle back today I couscous not help but notice the camilla bush. In only 2 weeks it burst into full bloom. This things survives on just about no water and bursts into beautiful blooms every winter.

We have Camellias which flower in winter every year. I've tried pruning them at different times of the year to get them to flower in spring or fall, but NO! They always flower in winter.

They keep their dark green glossy leaves all year long but only blossom this tie of year.

Beautiful flowers.......only flowers here right now are snowdrops......no snow, though.....no snow at all this winter, though some winters we get some....usually only lasts a couple of days......lovely sunny day today......
One of the advantages of living near the coast. Even if it gets cold you usually don't get much snow.

We haven't had much snow this winter. Thanks for sharing your flowers with us
I don't think anyone other than New England has had a lot of snow so far.

Good so far. Unfortunately though as I recall Feb. is often the month when the snow is the heaviest.

I think they would be OK if the frost / freeze is not a long one. This plant as well as one at my house in town have seen the occasional dip below 30 over the years but if that happens here it is only for a couple of hours and maybe for a day or 2. Other than that camellias seem to thrive on neglect. This little one is in a corner area that does not get watered often . I hate to loose any plant. I even apologize to them when I have to trim them back.

Most plants seem to have a regular bloom cycle. My thoughts are that it is related to temperatures and the angle and amount of sunlight as the seasons cycle. Most things, including us if we lived without modern interventions are tuned into the cycle of the earth's relationship to and position to the sun.

They are beautiful, don't know if they would grow here in Scotland.
I'm guessing it is probably too clod. They like warm to moderate climates. .We didn't have them in Massachusetts or Toronto and I do not think I saw any in the northwestern US states either
