Lumberjacks

Sometimes necessity brings challenges we never considered. One of them presented itself to me this week. I got the job done but don’t think I will consider this for a late in life career change to being a lumberjack. Back in the day I would have tackled the job without a thought since all is fair in love and country living but I am trying to learn to respect age and arthritis. My orthopedist friend did tell me that if I could manage to do things I was not at risk for further damage and my primary says keep active, so ……….

There was a dead hedge of some sort of decorative fir tree on the side of the house when I moved in. It I hired one of the local “handy men” to take it out. He took out 2 trees. It took all day, I paid him for the work done, he spent the money on booze and he did not return the next day. I was not about to pay what a tree service would charge to do the rest. My next thought was to use it as a base for climbing vines. I tried but that was taking way too long.

Not being able to swim every day I get restless. The other day I was doing some overdue cosmetic gardening and clipped a couple of dead branches off. Idea – instead of just taking the trees out like the guy I hired did I could cut all of the dead branches off then use the remaining trunks (about 5 - 8 incches in diameter) as the base for some sort of creation to be determined at a later date. Got out the heavy branch cutters and “defoliated” 5 of the 8 trees before it got too dark. Yesterday returned to the last 3. In the process I discovered that since the trees had been long dead their root systems had pretty much deteriorated and getting them would not require digging so deep I would have a new well. I got them all out and piled in the back yard before it got dark once again.

I still had to cut up and dispose of the remains. We have a chain saw at my house in town but the vibration it creates was a bit much for me 5 years ago. It shook me so hard I couldn’t see while using the saw. Seeing what you are cutting is a good thing. No need to remake the Texas Chain Saw Massacre. I was able to cut everything into firewood size pieces with a larger reciprocating saw and create an actual wood pile. The smaller branches are piled up for gradual disposal in the landfill trash. In consideration of others who use it I do not want to fill the entire shared trash bin at once. In the old days I would have simply piled them up and burned them but with the fire danger and air pollution regulations that is not a possibility.

The neighbors could not believe what I did – frankly neither could I. I spent the last hour in the Jacuzzi in hopes of warding off potential aches and pains tomorrow. If that doesn't work I’ll remember what Boogie said in a comment on one of my other blogs – that the Air Force says take some Motrin and get drunk. My sister tells me that if I get drunk enough I can skip the Motrin.

When I've been working hard like that Spirit, I always find that a really hot bath or shower is required. It always seems to do the trick for me, especially if there is someone sharing it with me.

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

Or look like my poor cat after surgery with his long fur shaved , attaches and a drain. I'm have been calling him Frankenstein's cat.

I will leave the chain sawing to my son. I had to replace many of the tools my husband had with lighter duty ones for me. Finny thing, he is gone but the work isn't. He was a foot taller and 100 pounds heavier than me. As a retired fire battalion chief told me when it comes to physical tasks every inch and 10 pounds makes a difference.

The good thing about being a girl is that we may need to do the dirty work but we can take a long bubble bath without anyone questioning it.

I suppose that works like good pain meds. It still hurts but you don't care.

Interesting here. Personal burning is not allowed but we still have agricultural burns which are far worse for those with compromised respiratory systems because the cloud the are for an entire day or 2.
