Gut Feelings

I read an interesting article today about the brain / stomach connection. It refers to the stomach as a second or back up brain – gut feeling. It went on to explain this scientifically as the fact that the brain and stomach develop from common embryonic cells and remain connected for live via the vagus nerve. The advice is to listen to the “gut feelings”. They are messages from our secondary brain.

I never considered the brain / stomach connection but I know I definitely have a stomach / emotional connection. My digestive system is the first to respond to stress or fear. My first response to extreme pain is to vomit.

I have long been a believer that nutritionally our body tells us what it needs, if we listen. Listening is the hard part as like most my food choices are more apt to be a response to my taste buds than my stomach. I have both neurological issues and digestive issues so the “faulty wiring” theory seems to show up here as well in my case.

Not sure about all this but it is definitely “food for thought".

Well I have no doubt most people think through their stomach! It's something they use everyday which can't be said for the brain.
What the heck is brain food, anyway?
We are what we eat.
They say that most of us don't use half our brain.....so the other half is waste product.
Well, the stomach produces more than half waste product, so it's more of a brain than a brain.
Not only that..... it produces waist product too.
And to prove my point ...I think I just had a brain fart!

Interesting. The mind has great power. In my case, bad emotions like fear, nerves, pain, stress, etc., affect directly my stomach.

I think the article could be stating the facts. I've lost count of the number of people who say they have an upset stomach when something happened to upset their routine. It happens to so many people.

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

I totally agree... and have experienced it first hand. There are still many who think that mental stress only will bring on a disorder and yet if they went through a thought process, they'd discover it affects both! Great blog!!

Hi Spirit: Pain makes me feel sick to my stomach too. When I was in emergency passing a gigantic kidney stone and had extreme pain you would not believe, I vomited about twenty times.

I read somewhere that the main cause for overeating is loneliness, so the mind/stomach connection must be present there.

Right Alfie, like when you are carrying a backpack or heavy object and the fight or flight reaction kicks in, the mind says get rid of the extra weight and run like heck or kick butt. If you have a weight (like food) in the digestive system it says get rid of the weight (barf or poop) and run like heck or kick butt.

I think we ladies are more prone to this, perhaps becasue we are more in touch with our emotions.

I know mine reacts when my eating routine is upset but my digestive is over sensitive about foods etc. I just wish my brain would not allow my taste bud's desires to over ride.

Thanks for the additional info. I remember when Chuck had his heart surgeries the irritation to the Vagus nerve was a post op concern.

Definitely - everything is connected. The only times in my life I caught colds and other viruses was when I was under extreme stress for prolonged periods of time.

Now all we need to do is follow through with what it tells us. In my case I do best eating grains which = carbs which is contrary to the current thoughts. My challenge is to keep poo-pooing the trends and stick with what MY body wants for ME.

Loneliness and boredom. I remember my mother packing enough food for a week to take on a 5 hour flight. When I asked her how she would possibly need so much she said "Becasue I get bored". I also thing food and eating routines put structure to our day, particularly during the senior years as it did in early childhood).

Hope you can get it resolved soon. Like you stress disrupts my whole body and from there it becomes a downward spiral.

Never thought of the poop response. That was so true for my mother and 2 of my sisters. Add stress and stand clear of their path to the bathroom. Not sure which is worse - lightening the load this way or mine, barffing, often after I follow my instinct, however unwise, to kick butt. .

This is interesting. I've been reading a lot about the brain recently. I hope you never suffered, but I have had times in my life where I really suffered from migraine headaches. I just knew when it was going to be a bad day from the time I got up. I'd go to work anyway but I also knew that if I didn't get home by about 1 or 1:30 I would be really sick. Once I caught on to that pattern I was better able to prepare for it anyway. Strangely, those episodes are behind me now. I wonder if stress had simply becomes such an issue that it was a trigger? I say this because while the pain was in my head, a constant issue with these headaches was vomiting. Now that I'm retired I have other pains to deal with...lol But at least the headaches seem to be a thing of the past. Occasionally, republicans still make me vomit. lol
I had migraines for years until a optometrist, of all things, identified the trigger. It turns out that it's light frequencies and various angles of glare. I haven't had a migraine since the triggers were identified and I avoid them. Some are difficult though - like the flashing lights on emergency vehicles. Ad for politics, as you know I need to avoid them all together if I do not want to vomit.

The additives are definitely dangerous. My cat just had surgery to remove a tumor. The vet said that what he had is a common problem arising from the additives in their immunization vaccines. Makes sense to me as I have not taken any immunizations in years. Was advised not to by a doctor many years ago becasue I had bad reactions to all of them.
