Dia De Los Muertos

A couple of weeks ago I visited Olivera Street in Los Angeles. It is a couple of block area of shops, galleries, restaurants and street vendors all selling Mexican foods and goods. I wanted to see what basic materials they might have for some of my projects to tide me over until I get back to Mexico in Feb. Since it is mid Oct. the primary theme was Dia De Los Muertos, or the Mexican version of Halloween. Intricately decorated skeletons are one of the main decorations. I have a ceramic skull, approximately life size done in Talavera design but it tends to get lost in the rest of the decorations. I looked at several items and decided to paint my own. It now sits in my pumpkin and squash display in front of the house.

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

Absolutely Gorgeous!!!!!......Very Dio De Les Muertos.........
Thank you - While every culture has it's own version of the holiday the Mexicans do it best. Such a mixture of the richness and colorfulness of the indigenous people. I fell in love with Mexico at first sight.

Thank you. I'm willing to bet the indigenous cultures of your country have some pretty interesting symbols too.

Thank you. The past 10 years or so I have made an effort to include different ways of celebrating seasonal cycles of nature and basically the same beliefs of their significances. Some are offended by inclusiveness but I find it both enlightening and exciting and of course appealing to my ADD brain that is so easily bored.

It was great fun. The backgrounds on the Dia De Los Muertos works are do fun. There is a collection of basic symbols that seems to be unending. When the artist starts creating you just keep adding them as they come to mind. The finished product is an expression of the creator's vision in widely recognized cultural symbols.

Thank you. I noticed the new Orleans similarity too. I don't know too much about Cajun culture but like what little I have seen. Both have strong integration of the spirit and physical worlds .

Anything Mexican is full of color and energy. Although I am Italian American I never felt such a good fit with any other culture. I sense some past life connection.

Now if it just had this effect on the kids in the neighborhood my garden would be happy.
