Throw Back Thursday - Way Back

Unfortunately this old photo did not scan well. We got a new printer / scanner recently and either this one is not as good as it is supposed to be or it needs some tweaking and adjusting but that will have to wait until my current project is complete. In the meantime I didn't want to miss throwback Thurs.

This photo was taken sometime in the 50's. Mostly I swam in an old quarry filled with water or small irrigation pond on my grandparents farm but occasionally my dad would take us to to near by lake where they actually had a dock! I had my first official swimming lessons here.

I am the one in a swim dress and cap on the stairs. One of my sisters in the foreground. I have no idea why anyone would put a in a granny swim dress but my grandmother, who I lived with at the time, had some unusual ideas about what was appropriate. Looks like she may have thought it was still 1920 and she wanted me to be in style.

Maybe Grandma didn't want you to look like a hussy!

Great old picture, I love these old pictures. You both look like you are having fun, no matter HOW you are dressed!

Or at least her idea of one.

I know why the swimdress, so you would float better as you were just learning to swim
Good thought but the more suit the herder it is to swim.

You are right about that but the good thing was that when I got to lifeguard class I had a head start on being able to swim with my clothes on.

Even though eventually the swim dress became a Speedo or tank suit as we called them then by high school swim team.

I'm not sure. I had a few others that scanned fine on the old printer / scanner.

I was probably taking my time because the water was cold. Back in ma it never gets very warm.

Cute pic Spirit. I wish they still had swim dresses because every bathing suit in the store is way too revealing for me. I remember the girls had to wear those rubber bathing caps in the pool. The boys had hair too but weren't required to wear a bathing cap for some reason. The caps looked awful and were always too small and my hair would get anyway.

There are a couple of places that sell swim dresses. If you do a search one should come up. They are the same places that sell bathing suits by size and bra size and sell tops and bottoms separately. What a god send for most of us who are not proportioned like the standard sizes.
