Photo Monday - Tumbleweeds Even though I lived with them for many years I never paid much attention to tumbleweeds other than clean them up after high winds and occasionally consider what I could create with them. This year I learned all about them - not by choice. A couple of months ago these strange weeds started sprouting in my garden (PHOTO 1). They were very prickly and grew super fast. Soon I noticed them growing absolutely everywhere and getting huge in a week or 2. About that time I saw a news clip about "the only thing growing in the drought". Seems there is a bumper crop of tumbleweeds since we have had such a dry season. Apparently they remain dormant until the conditions are perfect, then poof! I actually paid attention and watch, learning that my mystery weeds were tumble weeds. It is going to be a mess when they dry out and blow around. Not sure when that happens. Photo 1 Sprouting tumbleweed. Photo 2 full grown tumbleweed Photo 3 Mature tumble weed ready to detach and blow around. Photo 4 The field across the highway from my house. Yikes! It's going to be a mess when these start bowing around. Spiritwoman ^i^ |

I remember seeing these rolling down the street in front of our house in California. We had a huge field beside us that apparently they came from. I didn't know they grew that fast.

It's scary the first time one blows out in front of you on the freeway. You think it is going to be a collision but whey you hit it it just goes poof in a million pieces of twigs! Spiritwoman ^i^

Good idea but now you have me laughing at the sight of a man showing up to take me out with a huge tumbleweed in hand. Maybe if it were attractively decorated and presented with exceptional style I might just keep it. It would not need water. Spiritwoman ^i^

Living in the rainforest and associating tumbleweed with going on vacation and exotic dry landscapes and cowboy songs, I always loved seeing them rolling around......but I can now appreciate that they could be a nuisance, though I don't suppose they are any worse than an invasion of 6 ft tall Canadian thistles are here......... The prickly part seems to go away when they dry up but when they are dry they tend to disintegrate, at least in part, leaving an annoying layer of small twig like pieces behind. Spiritwoman ^i^

I think you should put on your cowboy boots and sing this song. I learned something new. I didn't know tumbleweeds grew I thought they were just junk weeds that gathered as they rolled along the prairie. Silly me Spiritwoman ^i^

I've seen people use them to make snowmen for holiday decorations but never a tree. You may have given me an idea to add to my outdoor holiday stuff. They are natural after all and I could paint them in a number of colors. The challenge would be getting them to stay put when the winds come up. Spiritwoman ^i^

Interesting. There are similar plants here, in arid places. I never would have thought taking pictures of them.

Wish I could send you one but have no idea how to pack it since they are both large and fragile. Could cushion the outside but I think they would still break up in shipping since they are not very solid. I could try delivering but I don't think tsa would go for it and even if they did agricultural inspection would likely confiscate it. . Spiritwoman ^i^
