This is another embroidery version of Huichol yarn painting. Celestial faces and bird messenger. I finally completed this one - and before cool weather yet. Yarn art uses a technique of gluing colored yarn on a canvas to form a painting. There are usually about 20 characterless to a painting and many tell a story.

I use one character per design. Both of these are on a pair of jeans. That way I get to wear my art.

That is great Spirit. Do I understand correctly, you glue the yarn rather than sew it?

Guess I didn't explain well enough. the Huichol do a kind of yarn art. I adapted the style to clothing and use standard hand embroidery stitches, Mostly they are chain stitch which easily simulates the yarn paintings but they are actually sewn to the cloth.

A great deal of compliments and an occasional giggle. I remember meeting a new guy a few years ago who burst out laughing explaining that he hadn't seen anything like that since the 70's in San Francisco.

They are fun to wear and great conversation pieces. The color schemes are consistent with the Huichol paintings. My love of bright color is no doubt one of the reasons this art form spoke to me from the moment I first saw it.

I have some shirts done this way too - one is just about every color. I use them as top shirts or like sweaters.

Not sure if I'd call it patience or the inability to be still. Hands, feet, mouth etc., something always has to be moving so I figure I might as well make it productive.

The result of having champagne tastes on a beer budget. Growing up way out in the country the only way I could have pretty or stylish things was to make them. Skills that lasted a lifetime.

Thank you. The Huchiol designs are very similar to our hippie stuff from the 70's. Maybe becasue they are both psychedelically inspired. Peyote was a staple for the Huichol. They still use it in ceremonies. One of those ways in which the very old cultures were way ahead of us.

laughing here becasue both of my girls used to object to me decorating their clothes. Even as adults they are downright plain in their choice of clothing. Sometimes I wonder how they can be my kids.

That would be me! No such thing as housework or means when I am working on something intently. The embroidery is not a intense as the other things though. It is something I do while sitting in the evenings. It is impossible for me to just sit and watch TV or a video. Hands have to be busy and brain doing at least 3 things at once.
