Understanding the Devil

Visualizing a personal form of the devil has always been difficult for me since my belief system does not personify either good or evil. We see them as an energy spectrum and do not even define them as good and evil, but rather different ends of the light spectrum, sort of like the positive and negative poles on a battery. Without darkness we could not know light.

As many know I have been doing Tarot readings for some time. While I certainly know enough to do readings like anything else there is always something to learn. Part of my daily routine is to select a card at random and do some research on it.

Today’s study of the Devil card and what it represents was right on. It also fits with Carl Jung’s theory of archetypes.

The Devil is not an external force. It is a force within us (addictions, fears, harmful impulses). “The Devil” is a scapegoat where we project the inferior side of ourselves in order to feel better. The Devil is a metaphor for the things we surrender ourselves to (interpersonal emotional games, addictions, anger, lust etc.). We are held captive by something we initially embraced giving it power over us. We are chained to the bad connections in our lives.

Now all I need to do is to simplify this idea so I can explain it to my 8 year old grandson. He has a friend who obviously comes from a Fundamentalist Christian family. being do not hesitate to share things and do so as they see them. Justin keeps looking for this Devil who his friend tells him will poke him in the butt with a pitchfork. He also keeps looking around for a visual God. So far he seems to accept my explanation that both are like air – there but you can’t see them with your eyes. The practice in my family is to expose to as wide a variety of belief systems as possible without discrediting any of them. That gets a bit tricky at times.

A good example of someone afflicted by the devil can be found by reading blogs, but of course you wouldn't want Justin reading some of the devilish crap we have to put up with on this site. That would scar the boy's mind forever.

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

I imagine him as looking like something like a scarecrow However, all joking apart, he running rampant at the moment.

Very interesting! I like paranormal too. I once read cards for friends before. According to them what am saying to them was true. I stopped reading cards when I became a Christian.

The Devil card not always represents his name on the card.

Justin just started 3rd grade. He would think the current stuff going on here is too "babyish" for him.

Good blog Spirit -- many times as Christians we want to blame the devil on anything
Negative in our lives -- when usually it's just decisions and choices we made that brought the negative things in-- light in-- darkness flees-- if only we would live more with that in mind!!
If only we would all deal with the devil in us................

A scarecrow - I like that visual. Make it a scary scarecrow.

Discontinuing practices is not unusual when ones becomes a Christian. I usually Elaine paranormal abilities to Christians as what is referred to in the Bible as the gifts of the holy spirit.

Exactly and our challenge is making the right decision, even in small issues that seem insignificant.

Interesting blog, Spirit. The Devil has many disguises, and can be an "angel of light" as well as a beautiful and sexy (but full of evil) woman who attracts you. Evil is within us and the "devil" is anything that tempts you to do bad things or to hurt someone. Children can be easily confused and be afraid of that red figure with a pitchfork.

Trust in dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity.(Khalil Gibran)

Especially when they have good imaginations or friends who do.

I just want the kids to have A belief system. Since I believe there are many paths and that all are just as valid as the other they need information and experience. Restricting them to one belief system leaves too much room to question spirituality all together.

Sounds about right. Kids are curious about spirituality and others things they can't see, touch eat or smell.

Interesting blog........I'm wondering why you think it is so important to have a belief system.......What, in your mind constitutes a "system"?.......Why do you think a system is a good thing?.......It seems to me that the idea that Humans need to think and believe in systematic ways is the cause of a lot of problems, suffering and keeps us from moving on ,,,,,,,,,systems are closed........systems generate all kinds of poisons.....like loyalty and defending one system against another...........Systems are a good thing in many areas of our lives......they streamline our tasks and understanding .......but we are also enslaved by systems.............left-brain thinking is a wonderful thing, but western civilization has gone overboard with systemizing.........Why not be playful of mind and heart..........there is much joy in that.........
" if you don't believe in something you'll fall for anything". Words from a country western song I can't remember.
