Working Together

Today I started another nebula painting. The first stage was planning how the colors and techniques would work together to produce the effect I want. This particular nebula will work best if I do the background colors first then paint the rest on top. This meant spending an hour or so doing something similar to painting a wall of variegated colors. As I was thinking about how the colors and techniques needed to blend to achieve the desired effect my mind wandered to how this applies to people.

When presented with a problem it often takes several people working together and contributing what they can to solve it. I was reminded about a time when some friends and I got seriously stuck in the mud about 15 miles from anything. I was in college in MA. It was spring and we just couldn’t wait to get out to some of our favorite isolated haunts. Only problem was it was way too early and still too muddy. The car, one of those early 60’s style heavy tank type things, was absolutely buried. It was pre cell phones and we were a long ways from anything or anyone.

There were 2 solutions – go for help or get the car out. We decided to approach the problem from both ends. The 2 of us who were most athletic started out going for help. The 2 who were more mechanical and logical stayed with the car to try various things to get it out. The 5th person, a guy who was neither athletic, mechanical or logical and physically not very strong, was very devout to his faith. The guy who was the de facto team leader had him stay in the car and pray. Good call as he felt useful and was not put in a position where he needed to exceed his capabilities. His efforts were very meaningful for him. While the rest of us were action people none of us excluded divine assistance. My view was the same as now. Prayer focuses positive energy and we really needed that.

The guy and I who were designated as the “runners” were about 7 -8 miles into our 15 mile marathon when we heard a car coming down the road. The “brains and brawn ” managed to use rocks and wood they found at a boarded up cabin to get the car out. I like to think that the focus of energy via the last person’s prayer helped focus on a solution and find the materials they needed.

If they had not succeeded within an hour us “runners” would have made it to civilization and assistance. Either way the problem was solved by everyone contributing what they could and “blending”.

This is an example of the importance of a teamwork to solve any trouble. I like your blog, Spirit. Show us the painting when finished.

I use Hubble Telescope photos for my nebula. Nothing I could imagine could be more awesome than the real thing. At the moment I only have the background colors on the canvas. I will be painting the nebula on top of this.

Right now it looks like a giant potato.

The best part is that it just happened - we didn't have to work at it.

thank you. Giggling though becasue the Amen sounded like it should come from the guy sitting in the car praying.

will do. Not sure how long this one will be. I have a busy week lined up and won't have as much time to work on it as I would like.

Even when we had no idea at the time (along with not having enough sense not to get into these situations to begin with). When this incident happened s and I were young enough to believe things just work out - and that friends always "fit". Oh to be that naive again.

That sounds like an ideal solution.

Me too! I sit here looking at the potato and want to get to work - but no - I have appointments all day. If responsibilities did not intrude I would likely become more and more reclusive and just work on my projects.

We approached it from all directions. One of them was bound to work.

I think the concept of team work develops in our early years. Growing up on a farm there were many situations where everyone was needed to solve a problem. That concept has stayed with me but it took a while for me to learn that many do not see things this way and their ego can get in the way of problem solving.

Nebula effect requires layering. After struggling with my first one it became apparent that the best way to approach it is to do the background first, then add the rest rather than the other way around.
