Rules of Technology

I have to get a new cell phone and am not looking forward to learning the new minor changes. Seems that nothing stays the same. Wonder how long it will take me to get answering and making calls figured out.

These rules seem to apply to more than technology. Granted he is disabled but my in his 40's is beginning to have more difficulty with change than I do. He is in the process of getting his driver's license reinstated. It has been suspended for some time due to unpaid fines. Yesterday he went to the county courthouse to get them taken care of. This is the way things used to work. He found that the whole process is changed. The hours had changed and by the time he got to the right place they were closed for the day. (Cut backs - they close early) Fines must now be paid through the DMV and they had no information on that. They did not have a complete list of them available so directed him to a web page. He came home disappointed and completely frustrated.

Last night I went to the web page and got the info. It's crazy. It appears he owes less than he thought but most of the "convictions" are for minor things and not the same as what he was cited for.

I am about to face the same problem about a cell phone and I am NOT looking forward to it.

Sad about your son's process of getting his driver's license reinstated. I am sure to make all these changes it required more employees (more government) also.

I'd like to think it is more a matter of redirecting funds and priorities but as John Lennon says "You may think that I an a dreamer........" I am.

We're like mrsjoe. We just have simple flip open phones that we talk through. We don't even bother texting, why text when you can talk???? If we need more we use our desktop computers. Old fashioned? YES!!!

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

Good luck finding one like that on the major carriers. My on uses something similar and needs a new one. I searched on line and only found 1 that comes close. I liked flip phones becasue they don't "butt dial" or get scratched up as quickly but they seem to be a thing of the past. Worse yet the new ones get bigger and bigger so the screen can accommodate all of the none phone functions. I mean who wants to watch movies on their phone? I don't even watch them on my tablet. If I am going to sit and watch something I want to see and hear it easily. I think that is one of the reasons we have a up to date large screen TV.

LOL Spirit... hey these teens watch movies on their IPhones, while they are being driven to their cottages or elsewhere, something I learned recently!! I don't care for the flip phones, changed mine some time ago because I had to. Yes, I had to learn how to text simply because I had developed carcinoma of the vocal cords & couldn't use voice. I'm back to great health now but I do use text when I cannot reach someone by phone. In a lot of cases, long distance charged accumulate on these cell phones, therefore it's cheaper to text. So many things to learn. I'm still learning, believe me!! Oh and personally, I'd rather watch movies on a lare flatscreen TV!!

Me too. I have been with Verizon since it was not Verizon yet. My son has to have a pre paid from one of the inexpensive companies becasue he isn't responsible enough for anything else. My daughter's and family, son in law's mother, Chuck and I are on the share plan. Works very well for us. My problem is having to get a new phone becasue mine is just about done (of course, the 2 year contract is up in a couple of weeks).

Glad you recovered completely. I eventually learn to do most of the things my phone can, usually when I am stuck waiting somewhere and am bored. then I never use it so I forget and get to learn all over again. At least I am easily entertained. Kind of like tossing a monkey a mirror.

I still have a 10 year old flip phone in a drawer. I loved it but had to get something that texts better (my kids all text so I had to earn). I also like ones that double as a camera becasue I never think of taking one otherwise.

Thank you. We will eventually get the son's license stuff taken care of but it will be 3 times as difficult in his case due to his limitations.

I tried dragon speak but have to admit that was years ago. I am hoping that it will work well by the time my arthritis progresses to the point that I can no longer type or my eyes fail as my mother's did. My companion tries to use all sorts of speech to type / text programs but his stuff usually doesn't turn out too well. However he does not speak distinctly and I even have difficulty understanding him at times. He keeps telling me his problems are becasue he keeps switching things but I am not sure. At present he often misses phone calls becasue it is ether connected to the wrong ear piece, hearing aide or car. I certainly don't want to trust it to the point of telling the car what to do. I don't use the phone while driving in any mode as I need to focus on driving and am not even comfortable with talking on the phone while doing it.

I always told my husband that I would use a computer when it could do something I did. In the early years that meant cooking, cleaning and watching the kids but then came word processing, spread sheets, graphics etc which I could use so I learned and adapted.
