Are They For Men or Women?

While responding to my last blog on car electronics I got to thinking about another "gadget" area - kitchen gadgets.

Internet ads, TV ads and magazine ads are constantly presenting us with some new gadget for the kitchen. Personally I have never been interested in many. I chop everything with a good knife, mix most stuff with a good mixing spoon or a basic hand electric mixer etc. and have one electric griddle / waffle maker. Most of my women friends do the same. I'm not sure if my habits come from having learned my cooking skills before all of these things were available, having lived on a limited budget or living in very limited space for the past 12 years.

The men in my life have all been the opposite. 3 - 4 food processor / chopper things in different sized, 5 - 6 electronic grill type things, a different slicer for everything (tomatoes, french fries, onions, melon etc), 3 - 4 coffee maker or hot water devices, electric fry pans, deep fryer, pressure cooker etc. My husband was always ordering me some kitchen gadget he saw on TV. I rarely used them an often he only used them once. When I moved in here most of the limited storage space was taken up with kitchen gadgets and appliances that were used once or twice then left on the sidelines becasue they still require basic cooking skills.

I always carved roasts and turkey with my trusty carving knife. My dad carved the turkey at my house one Thanksgiving. He got me an electric knife for Christmas that year. That one did come in handy though when I was cutting 8 inch foam for cushions and odd sized mattresses in the RV. As far as using it to cut meat - some 20 years later when I disassembled my family kitchen and downsized I gave it to my .

So who are these things designed for and marketed to? The women who do the work or the men who like a new gadget?

Going back to the time I was living alone, I can honestly say I was not into kitchen gadgets, about all I needed was a spoon for eating milk and cornflakes and a knife for spreading butter on my bread. I bless the day they brought out sliced bread. Things are different now Ann looks after me, she is a great cook and uses every gadget in the house!

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

Now you are both lucky and spoiled. Good for you!

I don't look at gadgets but I love to look at dishes, not the delicate kinds but the more creative pottery type. I never had less than 2 or 3 sets.

Thank you for the insight. I do like high end cookware. It seems to do a better job for some reason and holds up well (eliminates the need to replace as often).

We have a single serve coffee maker here but use the refillable containers. I buy different flavors and kinds at discount stores like Ross and am able to enjoy variety. Chuck prefers one kind and does the grind your own bean thing. If I still had a family or were preparing a large travel mug like I used to do when I worked I would probably still be using my MrCoffee with the vacuum carafe.

You are right - the men in my life have been quite unusual (and still are). Nothing ordinary for me in any aspect of life.

I agree - good knives are a must have.

He would gt along well with one of my friends who is a surgeon. He also trained as a chef at the Cordon blue (SP?) between med school or internship and residency. Just imagine a patient waiting for surgery seeing him moonlighting at Benny Hana's!

My father was the king of gadgets. Never a gift giving holiday without one. The only thing he liked better was something decorative with blinking lights.
