The Fashion Police

Wandering around the internet I found myself reading an article I would have never looked for, you know one of those ones that you get to while looking up something, then being distracted by something else that looks interesting, then something else……….. I’m not sure how or even why I got there but the article amused me.

It had to have been written by a very young person. It provided a great detail about what “older women” should not wear. By thirty several things were out, like miniskirts and spike heels. It went on to say that no one over 40 should wear tee shirts with anything printed on them because they were too immature. No cleavage because it’s too saggy and needs to be hidden under a support bra and high neck shirt. The author says that everyone has big hips and should only wear boot cut. My mother, who was the queen of uppity social appropriateness, would have been nodding her head. No rules given for anyone over 50.

I was really amused. I don’t know about some but most women our age have long passed fashion concerns. I think back over how my job dictated what I wore for my earlier years. With that behind me I simply wear what I want. All sorts of jeans – mix them up for variety. Long flowing skirts. Tank tops when it is hot because they are comfortable. I could care less if my “angel wings” show and my cleavage is saggy. If I am going to sit all day I wear yoga pants. If it’s cold I wear high boots, when it is hot sandals. So what if my hammer toe is visible.

I do have a “little black dress”, a couple of cocktail dresses, and a couple of tailored dresses and suits but I might wear them once a year, and then only if there is no way of getting out of it.

Maybe this why the lists of dos and don’ts didn’t go beyond 40. The older we get the less we care about what fashion asks of us and the more we listen to what the body likes.

Same reasons why a much younger man holds no interest for me.

We can make it fun becasue a lot of us will be there together. And I do have bail money. I'll share. It's in the pink box, behind the tin of herbs on the second self of the book case with the Egyptian stuff on the top - right inside of the front door.

My daughter is over 40, but looks about 30, so she gets away with it.

T-shirts, sandals and sweat pants for me, no matter what the weather. Take me or leave me, I am what I am!!

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

I wear leggings and tunic length tops a lot myself. Very comfy and as you said hide the worst parts. Living n a desert climate this only works for 4 - 5 .month of the year though. The rest of the tie it is too hot. As for mom jeans - I haven't had any of them since they were popular in the 90's.

I agree. I have my own fashion sense which is all that matters at our age.

I've always been a conservative dresser. My daughters now help me with my clothes buying.

We argue a little about what I buy. I'm not sure what I'm wearing all the time but I do get compliments. One day a lady told me I was "well kept" for a blind lady. Laughing

Not really sure what that meant?

I worry about dressing appropriately. However-- with the Madonna and Lady Madonna, and Miley stuff going on is there an "appropriate" for any one any more?
I can not imagine what "well kept for a blind lady" means either. When my mother lost her eyesight nothing changed about her appearance. She made sure someone she trusted helped her.

As one of the ladies at my residence says "If you've got it flaunt it." she is over 50 but is the size of a teenager so why not?

I still have a couple of things from the 70's myself. I have replaced the elastic etc. a couple of times but I still wear the pieces on occasion.

Lets not mention getting rid of stuff! I still shop a lot but mostly get things I use as "blank canvases" for some of my projects or a top or pair of pants to go with something I have made. I had to impose a rule "if you get something new something has to go" on myself becasue I live in very small places and simply don't have room. That helps me immensely with keeping the collecting under control.

That is great. My last day job was on a college campus so I got to do the jeans thing too. I remember when all of us women had to practically march in the streets to be allowed to wear pants suits to work. So glad that one is over.

So long as she doesn't try to look like a teenager, I say flaunt it.

That's why I wear shorts.
