 Hi Spirit: AA literature claims that the reason certain people rub us the wrong way is because they are doing something despicable and they remind us of ourselves because we do the same thing.

I never accepted that idea because for me it's just the opposite...they are doing or saying something which I find despicable, something that I would never do myself.

I had a similar conversation with a friend yesterday. Her daughter is in a serious relationship for the first time and for the first time ever and is realizing a couple of things - relationships are work no matter how much you are in love and that when in a relationship you see a lot of yourself reflected back and have to deal with it.

I think the AA point of view is geared to help us get out of denial and face and accept our issues since that is a major function of the program. Like all programs parts work work some and other parts for others. All help us to know , accept and get better control of ourselves. Even at that denial works sometimes. For me it keeps me from allowing chronic pain from limiting my participation in things I like. It's going to be there no matter what but I don't have to accept it's limitations.

Thank you for the vote of confidence. I try but just like Christians Pagans are not perfect, just doing our best to live our beliefs. Just as it is for you Christians, that is a tall order some days. I guess if we were perfect spiritual being there would be no need for us to be in human form.

You may not see that you are doing this but I think you do. Personally I do not find being called stupid, mentally ill and other things you choose to label me becasue of I have a different view on some things at all endearing or attracting. Think about it. Maybe you don't mind being called offensive things but almost everyone else does not. Of course those who choose to engage with you do the same but that still does not make it OK to purposely put people down - the philosophy yes, but not the human expressing it. Even if you have some valid points people tun the entire message out becasue it is more than likely hurtful and insulting .
