Again there is a difference between running an unconfirmed story and a lie. In news parlance and unconfirmed story, maybe the same as a lie being told. but doesn't mean the story is a lie, just unconfirmed. The news media, for the most part. tries to avoid that.... can't say the same for the President. Confirmation of a story is essential to journalism, as such the punishment does fit the crime, and it shows the news media to be respectful of the truth. but it says nothing about what the actual truth is. 60 minutes was charge with publishing and untrue story about Bush. The story was not proved to be false, just unconfirmed. The evidence was put in question, but not the story. People were fired. Now if we can just get the President to understand that he is also a news source. We'd actually have something to compare it with.

For example the Trump and Comey thing., You people just don't get it. Trump trying to force Comey to say he wasn't involved ( at the time he wasn't involved). Served, but one purpose.. To give Trump an out if ever became involved. The credibility of the FBI to say he wasn't involve and then say he was...... what's was truth and what's the lie? He does that all the time, it's what Trump does. The same thing you are trying to do with this story.. If you can prove part of it to be a lie... then all of it must be a lie.

I remember when Reagan fired all the Air Traffic controllers in order to dismantle the union. That was ironic for someone who was a Union President in his youth. Perhaps Trump will fire the entire FBI for the same reasons.
