Social Security Cuts

Yahoo News......A woman holds a sign against cutting benefits. Source: Wikimedia Commons/Djembayz

On Thursday, Rep. Sam Johnson, a Republican from Texas and chair of the Ways and Means Committee, introduced legislation to significantly cut Social Security.

The bill introduced by Johnson, who is also the chair of the Social Security subcommittee, slashes benefits, adds means testing, and would raise the retirement age from 67 to 69.

For most workers, the bill would cut Social Security benefits substantially. As Michael Linden, associate director for tax and budget policy at Center for American Progress, pointed out on Twitter, a letter from Social Security’s Office of the Actuary calculated workers making around $50,000 would see checks shrink by between 11% and 35%.

Nearly every income bracket would see a reduction, save for the very bottom. People making around $12,280 in 2016 who have worked for 30 years would see an increase of around 20%. But young people making the same amount would be hit hard by the changes. If they had 14 years of work experience by 2016, they would see their benefits cut in half.

The plan would also cut entirely cost of living adjustments (COLA) for retirees earning above $85,000.

If nothing happens, Social Security will start to lose its ability to pay benefits in full in the 2030s. However, Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo notes that by 2090 it will still be paying at 74%.

Of course we just need to buy a few tanks and planes and boats instead.

We absolutely need to bomb and kill those radical Islamic.terrorist, and possibly,( it could happen), North Korea and Russia and China....

WE need more, can't do it with we got.... not ALL that possibility. but ,of course, Global warming ain't possible..

Of course,s we don't need it to line the pocket of defense contractors,
but we do need it, more to screw the American workers.

Now you folks... over there... you know who you are?.. Are going to say, it's not going to pass, but fail to see that whether it passes or not. You have elected people who believe it, what does that say about you?
And those you opposed, if it's stopped, will be the ones stopping it...
So don't give me any of that " I told you so" , if it doesn't pass.
I'm to busy saying it now, to listen.

Now we don't want to raise The Social Security Taxes,, because businesses pay 50% of Social Security., would not want those business to get hurt, now would we?

Hey they can't do that, they are going to steal your money. You paid it...
In your dreams.........Social Security. is a socialists program, government pays it,, you just pay taxes, and the heck with ,what it's earmarked for.

If you don't get it.... these folks don't believe in even pay, flat tax or anything because.....it's not YOUR money, it's OUR money.

It okay because your getting yours? typical response!

You and I will be dead soon, and what kind of world do you want to leave?

I happen to think Social security, Medicare is the best program this country has. Heck, there's is not even a second place.

It actually serves everybody, not just seniors. And people who get it actually contribute to it. Wow, there's a rub.

Just to be fair, there are some Liberals, who would be against Social Security Cuts, because they live in Fantasyland and think money grows on trees.

How about some other social program cuts to pay for it......No Way they say!

How about correcting abuses of those who now get social progrtam money, NO way they say.

How about social security disability? like in some towns in Tennessee where half the people are on it. No way they say!

How about refundable tax credits, NO way they say!

It's the "lip service" of the people you voted for, you want in office.

I would certain hope it doesn't pass, but I shouldn't have to hope that.

I have to rely on hope, because of the people you have elected.

I hope those you oppose have enough power to stop it. I"m certainly not going to rely on those you voted in. I'm certainly not to going rely on Trump's veto.

Now let's deal with, if it makes to House floor, Tell me Paul Ryan would be against it, he would have the power. If he doesn't use it, Wow, what does that say? On that issue he has far more power than the President. Let's see what he does. Lets see if it's just one Texan, or a it's whole bunch of Republicans.
I'm thinking Republican are bananas, let's see if I'm right

One of the greatest problem of this country is that hardly any politicians are relied on, to speak for us on all issues. They only speak for us on specifics issues, that have got them elected.
I don't see any politician today, getting a proxy. I don't see any politician relied on to make the right decision, if it's not your decision.

Ironically if I had to pick one, I would pick Nancy Peolsi. Strangely, she's the one her opponents despise the most. I didn't vote for her so I really don't care, but I think her constituency, who voted for her does.. I think the way she is viewed give her more credibility for their decision making. I 'd almost say the same for Ted Cruz.

As we look at presidential nominees of both parties, we see none. have been relied upon to make the right decision, but only to fulfill our own decisions.

Romney, my God, You folks nominated him...look at him now. how many of those who voted for him, can say they relied on him. he didn't even have to make decisions, as President, . To get thrown down the toilet. McCain just got flushed. What about these people's character to get the nomination, did it mean anything?

I saw that and it is scary to think that rich politicians can't find somewhere else to save money, or some place to get money from and put it into social security. How much do U.S. seniors get now on old age pension? To have little savings and have to work until age 69 is not going to be easy either, especially with age related health problems and employers not interested in hiring old people.

You folks..... my focus is not on the bill being introduced. It's on the kind of people who would introduce it.

You put a lion in the hen house to keep away the foxes, and are surprised when the lion eats the chickens.

We live in time, when the aging population as a percentage of the total population is increasing. This happen the moist in smaller communities. Who's population is diminishing. many of the elderly were born, raised and will die in the same small community. It's their home.
No one has to tell me this, I see it. maybe you do too.

Of all the spending programs the government does, Social Security has the best economic benefit. Both in stimulus, survival, and regionally. The removal or severe reduction would hurt the economy. It would destroy the smaller community businesses, and many communities overall.

Ironically, it would hurt the stronghold of conservatism the most. Seniors would not be able to prop up the economy of these communities. first because they have less money, second, because many would be forced to leave the community to live with children in cities, that have jobs. Their children have already abandoned living in the same community to get jobs. Another sidebar of it, is that many of these smaller communities rely on family members and friends returning to the community for visits, reunions and stuff like that. Those people bring in new money. It's their only tourism dollars. As goes the seniors, so goes the tourism, so goes the small businesses so goes the community.

For younger seniors. who have prepared for life, and the need for social security is just a benefit and not a need. they too will be effected.
many younger senior still financially support their families. Without social security, that support may be non-existent. they will lose the idea of being needed. and find themselves needy. This is a destruction, not only because of the money, but in the Senior mindset. That kind of senior mindset results in all sorts of negative actions for the economy.

Although I speak of the most dramatic effects on the economy. One must still keep in mind, It will happen everywhere.

I don't understand how you can't see it.

you have made five responses to my blog/

The above response is the only one that deals with the subject. and that begins with " It seems you got your panties all in a wad". Even though I could have taken that personally, I responded without mentioning you.

Every single other response was about me, and not the blog subject.

I responded to each of those, in the same they were written

You basically have nothing to say.
