My Politics

When I turned thirty, politically, I had no party. I couldn't make sense of it.
Up to that point, I thought the political battle was about preserving individual freedom versus the common good. I thought conservatives believed individual freedom, outweigh the common good and liberals believed for common good outweighed individual freedom..
I wish now it was true, I could then find my own balance and support to balance it out
I remember the first thing that threw my political thoughts into a tizzy. I could never figure out how the ACLU was a liberal organization. I could not understand how individual freedom was about conservative choice and not about individual freedom.
I then could not figure out why Liberals believed that common good was just about giving government money away.
Between the two, I lost my way, as they lost theirs.

Yup, you're lost. No doubt about it.

maisie,

yup, I did lose my way....I question whether or not my original premise was correct...not if my conclusion is correct.

Roxy,

I agree. I'm the same way. I think many conservatives here would say you are totally liberal. You're just a harem girl. You have no mind of your own.
God! They don't get it. They talk about being respected and respecting others, yet they have no respect.

But what is your conclusion? You don't mention one
Liszt.

my premise was what I thought they were

my conclusion is what I now see them to be.

Mrsjoe,

You get it, everything goes both ways and has two sides. The side we fall on, doesn't mean we have to destroy the other side. It only means we have our say, one voice, and one vote.

It's a fine balance, old son.

There will always be conflict between individual freedom and the common good.

That balance shifts over time as social conditions change.

Rentier,
I know, but like mrsjoe said, it's not as clear cut like it used to be.
I wish it was.
I can fight the ideas of liberals, that sometimes their idea of the common good ain't so good
But how do I fight the Conservative who believes that individual freedom is only about THEIR freedom and not about OUR freedom?

I would rather belong to the Party of Good..alas, the lines are so blurred, I doubt one exists any more"
DanDee
Find the good in each party. They do exist. That lines that become blurred are the lines of good, it makes it hard to find.
