Fireflies For Sale

The recent cold winter and heavy snowfall in China, Canada and other northern countries has given me the idea of exporting fireflies to these countries for the winter.
I know a lot of you will be sceptical about the idea and think that the fireflies cannot survive the bitter cold. But, according to my grandpa, the "fire" in their bellies not only allows the firefly to provide light but also warmth, and he should know.
As a boy in China, during the cold winter nights when he and his siblings huddled around a jar of fireflies to study, they could feel the warmth emanating from the fireflies.
Now, I have always known my grandpa to be an honest man so I am going to believe him and not any scientific hocus-pocus that says otherwise.

I intend to sell my fireflies in 3 amounts: the 25 fireflies jar, the 50 fireflies jar and the 100 fireflies jar.
According to grandpa, the 25 fireflies jar is enough to warm one's heart. So if you are a couple, I would suggest the 50 fireflies jar and, if you have more than one partner, then I strongly recommend the 100 fireflies jar.
If you buy in bulk, I can offer you a 10% discount. So hurry up if you are interested and place your orders with me now.

By the way, I am also looking for agents to market my fireflies. The firefly is a clean form of alternative energy and during this time of spiraling oil prices, I can assure you that this will be a very good investment. So, seize the chance. Contact me now!

However, I still have one minor problem to solve: How to feed the fireflies in your country?
Grandpa said he fed the fireflies with leaves from the "firefly" tree. In Malaysia, the "firefly" tree is a mangrove tree called the Berembang which is found lining the banks of our rivers.

First, I have tried feeding them with dried Berembang leaves but the fireflies complained that they are not fresh.
Next, I have tried feeding them with the juice from ground Berembang leaves but the fussy fireflies claimed that the juice makes them too heavy to fly.
Now, I am working on my "leaf-pelleting" machine which would turn the leaves into pellets but I am almost sure that the recalcitrant fireflies are going to say that the pellets are too dry.

So, here is my proposal. If any of you have any bright idea how to solve this problem, please contact me. If it works, I am prepared to offer you a partnership in the business.

Lee

Note:
I have not quoted the prices of the fireflies here in order to avoid being reported for abuse. Kindly place your order and I will bill you accordingly.

I remember reading in the newspaper many years ago, a man in Florida was asking people to send the "light" from fireflies to him. He was paying 1 cent apiece for them. He wasn't using them for heat but for testing for treatment (medicine??) for leukemia.

Your idea just may work, lol. Clever!

I remember catching fireflies in a bottle when I was a kid - great fun. We also have fireflies here in Nova Scotia where we live now and I look forward to seeing them when the weather warms up - they only appear during the summer months. When I see the fireflies I begin looking for their gloworm mates...they are lovely to watch on a warm summer evening.

Happiness is where we find it, but rarely where we seek it.

Lee, what a beautiful story and very well written. I love fireflies and haven't even seen one since I was a little girl. I will take one bottle and you can bill me on my Visa card. HeHe

P.S. I have just finished reading my tenth book about the history and customs of China. What a fascinating culture.

Just don't steal the few fireflies that still exist at Kuala Selangor I could have done with some fireflies when we were in Laos last month, as we caught that cold weather that affected China and it was really miserable. For more than a week we didn't see the sun at all and didn't shower as the water was heated by solar heating, and without sun it was far tooo cold. Meal times were also hard as the restaurant was outdoors and it was freezing. So I really needed some fireflies to keep me warm.
Maybe I'll try a 25 firefly jar and see how it goes.........then if I find a nice man, maybe I'll need a 50 size jar.........

Hi Denver,
Never seen a firefly? Maybe you should visit Nova Scotia in the summer but meanwhile, carry on singing.

Hi ordinary,
There are fireflies here in Taiping too, among the mangrove forest along the river. I have caught the fireflies but have yet to see the glowworms. Must be a beautiful sight.

Thank you for the nice comment. You have not specified the amount you want so I have sent you the 50 fireflies jar and since you are my very first customer, it is complimentary. Have a nice reading day.

Hi Liberal,
The 100 bug jar is on it's way and since you are my second customer, I have included a free 25 bug jar to warm your heart during the cold winter. Lightning bugs are running out here too.
Canada, North America and China are my biggest markets! Malaysian fireflies are used to the food here and are fussy eaters. Methinks they won't eat anything but the Berembang.

Hi summer,
(Aiyah, fairies got wands one. Fireflies don't have. You dunno meh? Some more hor, your "kuliglig" that hums at night is called the hum bug. I wrote a poem about it wat? You forgotten already ah?)
The above passage is written in Manglish - English as she is spoken in the streets of Malaysia.

I think your "kuliglig" is the cicada. You can make records with it but the problem is the Philippines already have so many good singers.
As for the fireflies, I will remember your offer but does your fireflies like Malaysian food (Berembang)?
Business is okay. I have already received 2 orders but I worry that you may decide to export the fireflies too which would lead to a price war. So, maybe we can become partners eh?

Hi whiterose,
The 25 jar is on its way and since you are my third customer, I shall give you a 50% discount. Fireflies can be found in Taiping too, along the Sungei Gedung. I have been there sailing along the river from Taiping to Port Weld to watch the fireflies but was very careful about the crocodiles.
Freezing in Laos? I thought it has a Tropical climate. Anyway, I am sending you a 50 size jar free just in case you have to go back to Laos or you meet your nice man.

Looking forward to receiving my fireflies............ lets hope Pos Msia doesn't take tooooo long delivering them or else they will die in transit
You still have crocs in Perak rivers?
Are you sure "kuliglig" is cicada, cos I wouldn't describe cicadas as singing or humming; they are horribly noisy sounding like a chain saw or a jumbo jet preparing for take off. Not a pleasant sound! I tried googling "kuliglig" but could only find a tractor!!!

Hi whiterose,
Yeah, crocodiles can be recognized by their pair of red eyes at night. There have been reports of sightings but no reports of attacks. I don't know about your cicada but mine can hum rock and roll. . Maybe, summer's cicadas can hum Beethoven. . The cicadas can be very noisy but we are used to it.
