I have decided to catch for myself a leprechaun

I have been scrimping and saving for some time now but I still cannot save enough for my trip to Japan. So, I have decided to catch for myself a leprechaun. Why? Because it is the easiest way to get rich! Let me explain.

According to the wizardress (a female wizard), Madam Enid Blyton, leprechauns are the only ones who know where the end of the rainbow is and, everybody knows that at the end of the rainbow lies a huge pot of gold.

Why is it that only leprechauns know where the end of the rainbow is located? Well, according to mythology, all leprechauns are gold miners. In the old days, they mined the gold and buried them in secret hiding places. Unfortunately, leprechauns are also very forgetful; so they could not remember the places where their gold were buried.
One day, they decided to ask the Fairy Godmother for help. The Fairy Godmother, being a kind and helpful lady, waved her magic wand while reciting a secret magic formula (which I cannot reveal here because it has been copyrighted) and, lo and behold, a huge pot appeared at the end of the rainbow! The Fairy Godmother then advised the leprechauns to store their gold in the pot. "But what if others were to steal our gold?" the leprechauns chorused. With a serene smile on her face and a twinkle in her eyes, the Fairy Godmother replied calmly, "Nobody can steal your gold because only you can find the end of the rainbow. Others can only see the top half of the rainbow but not the bottom half because it is of the colours der, erango, welloy, nreeg, elub, ondigi and tiolev which only you can see." So, it came to be that only leprechauns can find the end of the rainbow.

So how do you make a leprechaun take you to the gold? They are such misers.
I will let you in on a secret if you promise not to tell anyone. You promise? OK, I believe you. Leprechauns have one weakness; even greater than their love of gold is their fear of bathing. All one has to do is to pretend to make them take a bath and they would gladly take you to the end of the rainbow.

Now, has anybody seen a little old man with a beard dressed all in green like Robin Hood?

Yes, leprechauns are only found in Ireland. I've been there a couple of times, but never managed to see one.

Hi FE,
That's good news! I hope they remember to inform me the locations of the sightings.

Hi Robyn,
Haven't you heard of emigration? Leprechauns can now be found all over the world, especially in gold-rich countries. Wherever there is gold, you can be sure there will be a leprechaun. FE, cariad, flakes and summerlane have spotted them in the USA, UK, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Hi VBG,
Yes, Enid Blyton was one of my favourite writers. I especially like her fairy tales. The Secret Seven? Not so much.

Hi ZANTOO,
Thank you. I shall not stop until I have found my pot of gold! In Magicland, only ladies held in high regard, like wizardresses and Fairy God Mothers are addressed as Madam.

One more thing cariad, do not let anybody know about what you have done. The laws in Magicland are very strict. Sir Merlin, the present Governor of Magicland, may decide to charge you for leprechaunicide.

Hi unduplicated,
So you could not find a leprechaun in Ireland huh? Maybe, you should have asked for help from Robyn, but not from cariad. Cariad has found one and all I can say is that she does not know what to do with him. Oh, summerlane says that there are a lot of leprechauns in the Philippines. Maybe, you have gone to the wrong place.
A Happy New Year to you too.

Hi flakes,
Thank you for your help. I think we may have a better chance if we search in Mersing. There is a gold rush there now and there has been an unconfirmed report that little green men have been seen panning for gold in the dead of night.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU TOO!

Hi Whiterose,
Please read my reply to Robyn. Leprechauns have been seen in Canada, USA, UK (Birmingham), Malaysia and the Philippines. In the Philippines, they have been there for so long that some are now permanent residents and others, citizens. Even summer's Lolo and Lola have seen them.

Happy New Year summer! Yes, a good laugh is a good start to the year which is why I have written this post at 1 am of 1.1.2008 (Malaysian time) but it was still 31.12.2007 at SFF.
Thank you for the invitation to visit your mother's province (I thought you were born in Manila) however, flakes and I are going to Mersing first. Please tell your Lolo and Lola not to sell the old house. I believe the reason why the leprechaun is under the house is because there is gold there. I am glad that your mom did not marry Leppy because these leprechauns are misers and love gold more than anything else, even their wives. Of course, if your mom had married Leppy, then she would not be your mom and summerlane would not exist anymore.

Hi Barb,
I am sorry but all leprechauns are little old men with beards. I believe that if summerlane's mum had married the leprechaun, then summerlane would have been born with a beard or maybe, half a beard.
However, I have been told that fairies are all female. Are you familiar with fairies? These are sweet little girls, always with a smile on their faces and carry tiny wands in their hands. They have a pair of silvery wings on their backs and they always wear silvery dresses made from fine spider web that had been soaked in morning dew. The morning dew makes the dress shimmer in the moonlight. So at night, when there is a full moon, you can actually see the fairies flying around by the shimmering light. If the light is in the hills, then these are Hill Fairies; if it is in the sea, then they are the Sea Fairies. It has also been said that if one were to meet these fairies, then one is very lucky because the fairies would normally grant you a wish or two by just waving their wands. However, I am not sure whether fairies can only be found in Ireland or, like the leprechauns, they have also emigrated elsewhere.

Hi VBG,
Thanks for the tip. That would help to explain why leprechauns have been sighted in Canada, USA and UK. It also explains their presence here since Malaysia is a member of the Commonwealth. (I think Whiterose may have also brought in some Irish whiskey). But I am puzzled by the leprechauns' early presence in the Philippines. Summerlane's Lolo and Lola's time is before the Second World War, which would rule out the US marines. To me there can be only two possibilities: First, the leprechauns have mistaken the local "whiskey" brewed in summerlane's home province for Irish whiskey. Second, summerlane may have a touch of Irish in her blood, hence her name and complexion. But Australia is the surprise here. So far, leprechauns have not been sighted there. There is definitely gold in Australia but, maybe, the Australians prefer beer to whiskey.

Hi cariad,
Thanks for the magic spell; I am going to need it. I am glad you squared it with Merlin. Since you are buddy-buddy with him, I have a request: Can you check with Merlin whether I need a permit or something to catch a leprechaun? I am not going to harm the little fella but I still worry that Magicland may not like it. They control all the magic there are in this world and I would hate it if, say, they were to remove the "magic of love" from my life. I would end up a rich but lonely old man!

Aha! So, like the leprechauns, the fairies have emigrated too. The fairy is staying with your mom in Manila? Hmm, summer, I would like to make a pact with you.
Fairies have been known to grant people a wish or two so I would like to suggest that if either of us were to meet a fairy, we would ask for two wishes to be granted: One for you and one for me.
For example, if I were to meet a fairy, I would wish for you that you and Oldboy would meet as soon as possible and for me, to strike the lottery. Why do I need so much money? Because back in early 1990, while sitting on a bench beside a lake in a park at Coquitlam, Vancouver on a winter morning, I have promised two wild ducks in the lake that I would be back to visit them. So, from Japan, I would like to fly to Canada. I hope the ducks can still recognize me.
