Wal-Mart and Hoity ToityISM

Origins: In common English speech, "hoity-toity" is an adjective used with disdain to refer to the pretentious, those who put on a show of pretending to possess refinement and sophistication (similar to "highfalutin"). per gOOgle Research

How often do folks spend money they don't have to buy things that they don't want to impress people that they don't like. They think this is the key to happiness. I tend to look for bargains and I usually find them.

I have observed an attempt by a care provider to shame another woman who works at Wal-Mart. Ironically, I have been a Wal-Mart associate AND a care-provider. They are both honorable. People need food and other items and someone has to stock the shelves. It would also make my day when I could help make somebody else's day. I also help keep a few folks out of nursing homes so that they could remain in the comfort of their own homes and take the burden off of their family members.

I don't do first class plane rides. It is not within my financial realities. I prefer the train, coach at a senior discount. It is far more enjoyable, comfortable and less stressful than navigating airports.

In a few days, I will be taking the train to Washington DC and staying at the William Penn House for a DAR convention. I am sure that it would be nice to stay at the Trump Hotel but that is not within my financial realities.

Hostels also have an advantage. I am a woman travelling alone and this is a chance to meet interesting people which might not happen at the Trump Hotel.

A person's value is not defined by how much money they make or an exalted status in society. It is a person's contribution in making the communities a better place and sometimes it can be done in the most humble places. money can certainly make life more comfortable but some folks never have enough and are miserable no matter how much they get.

Just my Not So Humble Prospective

Hello Starwomyn........Wonderful blog and I enjoyed reading it. I agree with my friend Rocket "hoity toity" is found in different ethnic groups also. I think it is something that is just in the human race.

I dont know if I'm Hoity Toity but at different points in time I accumulated alot of stuff, tools and the like for various projects over the years, use them now and then, but not often. Now I'm getting to the point of wanting to downsize even more than I have been lately. I've sold a couple of engine hoists, 2 cars (kept 2) and had a garage sale selling off lots of small items. Still have a trench digger (might use it just one more time) and other tools and things I don't need anymore. Less is more, the less I have the more space I'm getting back in my garage. It's still a nightmare of stuff. It's 40' x 20' or 6 x 12 meters 1/4 of it has a mezzanine floor. Will try to squeeze a car in it one day. Talk about 1st world problems. I cant complain, I'm blessed. Just need to re-organize

Judgment Day will be interesting - and all paths lead there.

Hoity-Toitiness.... Is there such a word? LOLOL

It's all in a person's attitude toward others.

I have encountered some who, although they didn't have a pot to pee in, snub and disparage folks who were struggling, and I've met others who are very comfortably off and treat everyone like the gal/guy next door no matter what their status.

I don't have much, but it's all paid for. I hate shopping, unless it's for food which I get at Kroger. Every once in awhile I will go into Wally World's sport department and get a new rod and reel, or camping supplies. I just reminded myself I have to replace a rod that someone broke the tip off of. As far as clothing, my younger girl keeps giving me clothes she won't wear anymore, just gave me 4 pairs of jeans that don't even look worn and 8 tank tops. Lol, why do I need to shop at all with a daughter like that?

I kind of have to agree with Roxy about the smaller stores closing when the Super Walmart came into my area, ( I live 14 miles from town ) a lot of stores shut down because they couldn't compete with their prices, even one of our bigger grocery stores closed where we could get excellent cuts of meat, but no problem, there's a nice butcher shop close by to where I live, it's 12 miles from the super store, beef raised right here and it's awesome!

I'm far from hoity toity, lol, I retired from the oil field a couple years ago and I'm used to getting dirt under my finger nails, whether it was from my job, or working here on my little farm. I'm not out to impress anyone and really don't care if people like my lifestyle, or not, to each their own, who am I to judge another person's life? Same as, who has a right to judge mine?

Wal-Mart actually has an on-line shopping site. The advantage of on-line shopping is finding products that might not be in the stores. A few months ago, I was looking for Teff flour which was not available in the local stores. I was able to find it on-line, I also use a brand of hearing aids batteries not available in the local stores. I buy them in bulk on Amazon. There are also specialized Astrology books that I need that can't be found in the local stores but I can find a list of small business book sellers on the Amazon site. I also have an on-line business because there is more of a customer base than what I would find if I tried to set up shop in the local community.

How to spot a Walmartian.......A person who uses folksy terms like "hoity-toity in order to signal to others that they are just plain folks who don't put on airs.......displaying a reverse pretentiousness and disdain that is it's own brand of hoity-toity.

Actually the Hoity-Toities are the customers who say they don't shop at Wal-Mart and mock the folks who work and shop there. When the Hoity-Toities do shop at Wal-Mart (and they do) they mock the workers are earning an honest living.
