MY TAKE ON POOR GRAMMAR OR INCORRECTLY SPELLED WORDS

I am not the world's best speller, and I believe that since spell check was created, my spelling has gone down hill even more.

Blogs and comments are made periodically on SFF about people who are "bad" spellers. I try not to make any judgments based on their spelling techniques, but I know that there have been times that I have. All I can say is "Thank God for spell check!" I try to remember to use it every time I post or make a comment. I am always surprised at what words show up that I have misspelled.

So, a person doesn't use spell check. Should we hang'm? Some times we are in a hurry, thinking of other things and forget to click on the "abc"

A couple of years ago I met someone from this site who was dyslexic. When we first started instant messaging he explained to me that he was, which helped me understand the reasons for the way he wrote.

I happen to feel that my Uncle is a very smart, intellectual man. However, he is a very poor speller. He is always asking how to spell some of the most simplest of words. He is also dyslexic. I don't see this as a reflection of who he is.

Some people have a real knack in writing. I envy quite a few bloggers on this site who are able to use wonderful, descriptive words to get their point across. My library of words is pretty mainstream.

I once had a friend who learned a new word everyday. How smart she was to do that .... I should have.

Personally, its not so much how the persons spells that is the tie breaker for me. Its usually what they say.

Some people are very consistent in their comments and/or blogs. They criticize, demean, make fun of and basically toot their own horns by making the other person look bad. Now that, to me, is not a good reflection of who that person is.

I've never quite understood why someone feels the need to "correct" another blogger or a commenter for a misspelled word or an improper use of a word. So what?

He/She may be horrible at spelling, yet be one of the kindest, most generous of persons.

Some may feel that bad spelling and poor grammar usage is an indication of a "foreigner" .... which is true, it may be. However, again .. its what the person says that will really give the tell tale sign if they are a "foreigner" out to scam you, or someone who is just like the majority of us on this sight. We are sincerely here to find friends, lovers and/or committed relationships.

Just my take.

I agree with you 100%. When you read men's blogs, the most common mispelled word is dining. They often type dinning. I have to overlook that. Same in the blogs. How do we know for sure it is a misspelled word? Maybe it was a typing error. I make those a lot, and try to use spell check but sometimes I forget.

I was schooled in phonics, and I always was the spelling champ. Others were good at math, while I am not. Our brains are either focused right or left. In our hearts, however, we are all pretty much the same.

I have seen many people who claim to be writers and have even had their work published but yet when they write blogs they make a good amount of spelling mistakes and even their grammar is atrocious at times. Frankly whats good for them is good for everyone else. So there.LOLOL

As a rule I try to check my work before it posts but I am never concerned with errors or spelling that makes it online. Many of my comments are made from a portable device which leaves off plurals etc and does not allow proofing without a hassle. This arena is communicating and those that have a need to bring their corrections out are just sharing a pet peeve I hope and not trying to judge. I also use a voice recognition software that gets here an hear mixed up. ... Etc
I am smarter than a fifth grader but please don't expect me to try for that on everything I post LOL

I wrote a blog on dyslexia some time back when I became aware of the terror or panic some go through because of the condition. They feel "less than mainstream" and as my son said one time, "a total screw up".

My daughter explained to me how lost she could get (on campus, for instance) and just give up and come home. Thankfully, when dyslexia is present there are increased gifts in other areas. Many of our most gifted people are dyslexic and can't spell worth a darn.
Because of their condition they also have an innate compassion and understanding for others.

PS...I've become very dependent upon spell check, too!

I could not agree with you more! I'm a terrible typist and sometimes when I get passionate about what I'm writing I make quite a few mistakes. Its what a person is saying thats important, not whether they can use correct grammar or spelling. I believe those that complain are just looking for something to complain about.

Chat, blogging, IM and text messaging are all animals that most of us didn't grow up with. I call it "Chatnese". While we grew up with emphasis on dotting our i's and crossing our t's those rules don't don't seem to apply much in these forms of communication. Now, I think if your going to write something other than a blog ie. a book, you definitely need to make a better effort. But even then sometimes things slip through the cracks. Did you know that MS Word Spell check will accept the letter "T" as being correct word? At least it does on my version but it's kinda old...lol. Even on the scroll bars on the news shows on TV I see mispelled words all the time. That would never have happened 20 years ago. It's the world we live in today.

I ain't as good as I once was but I'm as good once as I ever was.

Languages are contantly evolving, mostly becuaseof common errros in use. Manyof our words in English have a basein another language. However after eons of misuse, theyare assumlated intothe main stream. I do not spell, I do not type I do not use spell check. I have a hefty triple digit IQ. Perhaps because I refuse to use it up on petty details like spellin??

I agree Ola....although I usually am a mite judgemental when I get an e mail from someone who appears to have a 2 bean brain in a 10 bean world.

I do try to give people the benefit of the the doubt...we never know who had a stroke, who has problems writing, who is new to computers and doesn't know about spell check. then there are the people who are witty, salt of the earth, common sense ones who aren't good at language.

I personally never, or rarely ever spell check. I can spell. It's a talent, not a learned thing, and I'm uppity about it..so I don't use spell check....and lo and behold....there will be a mis-spelled word, cause I'm too lazy to proof read also.

I also don't worry much about grammar. I write like I talk. I do try to not use $5.00 words...it seems a mite boorish to me to do so....but every once in a while, one will sneak in.

I am a good speller. I very seldom misspell a word. Still I use spell check just as a back-up. It does bother me when I read a blog, or comment that has words spelled incorrectly. I blame that character flaw on my 8th grade English teacher. She was a Harsh woman, and made quite an impression on me. I don't correct other people when they misspell, it's not my place. We all make mistakes, and spell check cannot determine the meaning of a word. So we end up with 'there' when we mean 'their', or 'tell' instead of 'tail', etc. Theirs know knead to bee crewel....

As important as it is to learn any language well, the content of what is being read is what counts. Spelling mistakes are what we call "pecatas minutas". I love reading the blogs. I learn so much from them and I can identify with some blog writers and also differ with others. My respects to all of you, dear SFF friends.

Must be the executive secretary in me; I simply cannot stand all the poor grammar, misspellings, non-capitalized words when appropriate, etc. Y'all have your opinions and I have mine. BTW, I never use spell check. I proof my work over and over again to make sure it is correct. Again, that must be the secretary in me!

Well...Gets speaks chatonese and I speak typonese, and whatever else ya wanna call it......Yes...I said "wanna" and I know it should be "want to", but...oh well. There is only one word in the English language that makes me shiver when not used properly and that word is "snuck". There is no such word.....it should be "sneaked". The only reason it bothers me is that my mom pounded it into my thick head. I don't, however, correct anyone that uses it. I figure we should accept ppl for what they are and not be critical. After all, who on this earth is perfect??? Certainly not me!!!! Thanks Ola....good blog and good thankin',,,,errr is that thinkin'....errrr is that thinking....who cares!!!!!!

The Bill Cosby show aired, his TV son Theo, found out entering college that he was dyslexic. This was based on his own son's disability.

Ola I'm a crappy speller and often worst at english in general. When I was in college manytimes professor's would nail me on spelling and my writings. I still got high marks, because I got my point across. I feel that is what truly counts. Does the reader understand what you are saying.

Many people get right to the point, where others love to stretch it out. If you can understand the person from there writings you can learn their character better.

We should never assume that bad spelling is laziness or ignorance. My daughter is dyslexic, that's why I hate to see anyone complain about bad spelling. She only found out by accident while doing a psychology degree course at Uni. She graduated with a First in her major and two seconds...one in Statistics and one in English. She has an excellent mind, worked for the Deputy Prime Minister's office on policy making research into prison welfare and the homless. She now has her own business.

I notice errors. But I make them too. LOL

I'm not looking for anyone. If I was--It would have an affect on what I thought about them. (NOTICE I said affect and not effect)

NOT a few minor errors--but if there were lots of significant and obvious mistakes--

Never mind--it would probably mean absolutely-- NOTHING!! OOPS

You know what I think? Who really give a rat's AZZ? I'm a former English teacher, and I could care less!! I whip things off spontaneously ... half the the time I forget to check spelling. Anyone here who thinks spelling /grammar is the cat's meow, needs to join an exclusive literary group, just like those who are so anal about plagiarism. This is a venue where all people join ... no matter what their educational level. The THOUGHT is the thing!! F.Scott Fitzgerald, among others, had rooms FULL of edited copy of their own hand, admittedly so. However, many had ENORMOUS thought, and managed to get that across. The conceit of some who like to think they are wonderful writers, post blank pages. I continually SEARCH anything worth reading in this venue!!

I prefer to check spelling...usually, there are no errors. Once in a while, there is one error. I fix it. I find the misspelling in blogs distracting. But, as has been said in other comments, spelling is a talent, not a skill--and, we never know if someone has had a stroke or is dyslexic. Additionally, it takes great courage for many people to post at all--they deserve kudos for posting, not criticism for spelling and grammar mistakes.

"Atrocious" was once used to describe my spelling. One area no one has touch on, is "using a dialect" Cuz dis be da innernet, or was we ritin a book like noval ya know. its ok ta not spell sothing properly. Most here have stated "if I understand what the subject or theme is, I don't bother with the spellng". No one has mentioned syntax, or punctuation. This subject reminds me of the 3 "Germans" spoken in Germany. Hock Deutsche, Platt Deutsche, & Bavarian. A few have mentioned "typo". Sooo? I like your point. I don't judge either.

I do think the transposition of "There, & Their" is very common. but I understand which one they mean. Good Blog Budetta

Ola2006, this is another answer to your blog. I hope you don't mind. (try #4 to get this posted) Jul 24, 2008 10:43 am

Ola2006 I was going to put this as an answer to your blog MY TAKE ON POOR GRAMMAR OR INCORRECTLY SPELLED WORDS but I decided to make another one instead.

I think that if you want to help someone with their spelling and such then send them an email. If you are not allowed to do that then keep it to yourself and don't try to embarrass someone just because they don't have the education or mental ability that you do. How rude it is to do that?!

If you want to disagree on what the blogger has said than do that but, keep it on the subject and not on a personal attack. I always believed that humans should try to build each other up and not try to show each other up by pointing out how much more sophisticated you are than they are. If you can't accept them the way they are then that is your problem...not theirs.

I have been ridiculed in my life because of things like that and it hurts and makes me feel inferior. I don't think that anyone has a right to make someone else feel like that. Do you?
It makes me scared to blog or comment because these 'educators' jump right on you and stamp your self image in the mud.

I hope no one corrects the mistakes I have made in this answer. I have not been as lucky as others have in being schooled and not to mention that everybody has different levels of ability.

OK I'm finished. Thank you for reading.

To comment on belle's last remark "I sometimes will jokingly say something about spelling" I have done that as well, usually because the misspelled word turns out to be funny. For instance, I was instant messaging with a friend the other day and she was talking to me about proof reading some of her work. She said, "pood" instead of proof, and it set me off oh well.

There are more terrible things going on in this world, and why people are so critical about how someone spells? MAYBE NOT EVERYONE IS A BRAINIAC!!Some people have difficulties reading writing and spelling. Why put a person down because of lack of education or because parts of their brain do not fully make concept of a word and it's spelling.I say Hurrah!!! Or Hurray!!for the person who misses in his or her spelling at least he or she has tried.Typ-o's some people are not experts in typing so_ the keyboard becomes an obsticle course for some and they will hit wrong keys,I look for what's inside a person, their personality not how they spell.

Hi Karen

I am so glad that I am not the only one who gets confused with peoples' spelling and grammatical errors. Even Spell Check does not always provide the correct spelling as they have a limited amount of words in their dictionary. Also, they only accept American spelling

What I do not like is when members make fun of people who do not have the gift of spelling correctly. Perhaps it was a typo error, perhaps their first language is not English (guilty!). Perhaps they did not have the education other had. But there is no reason whatsoever to make fun of others, as I am sure those who do would not like to be made fun of when they make grammatical error or typos (I have noticed those who do that, and don't think highly of them for criticizing others).

Lets all accept each other for what we are. Lets try to get to the meaning of what is being said instead of nitpicking. Yes, it can be irritating, and yes it doesn't give them much credit. But I think we should be bigger than that and learn to accept others for what they are deep down in their heart.

Now let me use the Spell Check to see how many typos are in what I just wrote, haha.

No grammar check here, oh dear

I, too, make typing mistakes. I hesitate to criticize others who are simply trying to express themselves and may misspeak, or misspell in the effort to communicate. It is telling to read entries of those who are so quick to criticize or "correct." That, too, seems to be an indicator of the perspective, and even the character, of the individual.

I actually am usually a very accurate speller (is that really a word?) but I do know that good spelling does not always equate with good character, worthwhile human being or someone one would seek as a friend. I never judge anyone by their spelling. While I do believe everyone should make their best effort to spell as correctly as possible; let's face it, that should make no difference in how you feel about them heh friend? Having said that; I niver judge by the spelling, it is the total content & meaning that makes the man or woman. I canna bother to be judging another's use of the written/typed word! I am certain someone's spell check is running in circles over this post
Hugs & blessings to ye

I can usually over look spelling errors, could just be a typo! I am not the worlds best speller myself and usually forget to use spell check; too big a hurry.
What gets me is the grammar; but then I think, well I'd rather see how someone really writes, it usually will indicate how they speak, what they know, how intelligent they are, etc.
I met a guy on here whose profile was wonderful. I thought he was intelligent, active, a nature lover, someone with many interests. After about a week into e-mails I realized he wasn't what he appeared on his profile, someone had written it for him, he could barely type a sentence, not to mention the fact he was very simple minded, had no interests or activities at all, and didn't know much about nature other the fact that he went hunting with his family for 2 weeks every year.
Yes, I'd rather see the person's spelling mistakes, etc. and know who he really is.

Spelling is as important to me as the little black hair my mother always plucked from her chin. Pretty insignificant in the scheme of things. I used to be the red ink devil, correcting spelling and grammar on anything from the local newspaper to letters from friends. Now I have to use spell check to check how to spell grammar. The thing that really changed my mind was a class in basic linguistics. That's when I discovered that how you say something, what you say, and how you write it, are all as individual as personality and nationality. If Mark Twain had been so hung up on such things, well just imagine...By the way, I have one of those little black hairs now in the very same place on my chin.[image]

A word of kindness always makes our day one to smile about . Spelling can be difficult for the hearing ability that is less than 100 .percent or if we have a brain injury also but kindness is an action that we shouldn't forget today tomorrow or the next Good luck in your searches for new friends and kind and patient with each others ability,Queen of typo's here,

I am a "foreigner" in the four languages that I speak and write, sometimes (this is the darnedest thing) I'm speaking in English, and can't remember the word, but can remember in three other languages, I think the old brain plays games with me, English is very difficult, so many words sound the same and have different meaning and spelling, that is saying a lot considering that Danish is over the top. What I find sad is that our children are graduating from high school, with a poor vocabulary and writing ability.

PS. I am using spell check

Every day should be distinguished by at least one particular act of love.
