At a meal or when visiting, unless there's a family emergency and you need to be close to your phone, ..... and even then, put it in your lap if you must, I think it's extremely rude!!

I was at a piano recital at the University Women's Club and there was a young gal sitting in front of me on her cell. The lady sitting next to me was a member of the club poked and pointed down. At the intermission they were told to put their phones away during the recital as it was distracting for others at the recital. The parents were sitting next to the young girl and probably were quite used to this behavior and chose to ignore it. I think it is extremely rude and when I am out to dinner my cell phone is in my purse. I don't understand what is so important that you have to have your phone sitting on the table while dining out.

I find it so insane, so unbelievable and hilarious at times, at other times,
I can see how the addiction has snowballed. The most rude in my experience was a friend in her late 30's who phoned me and invited me for a coffee.....We met at our favourite coffee shop, she had said on the phone that she wanted to catch me up on her life...I have been a mentor of sorts to her since she was in High School.......minutes after we got our orders, she answered her cell phone and chatted with the caller for a long time, laughing and talking.....never said that she was occupied........ while I sat there staring into space........So rude.

One day I was sitting on a bench eating my lunch and looking out on the water in an area that is a park and shopping centre right on the fore-shore. I saw a man in a suit and tie get out of a very nice car, take off his jacket, roll up his sleeves, grabs a casting rod from the back seat and goes to the rocks by the ocean and starts casting. He then gets his cell phone out and stands there casting and talking on his phone......What a great way to combine business and pleasure.....

I do miss the social exchanges that have been replaced by the cell phone staring. I live on a small island, but there is a small city a short ferry ride away.
I used to commute to town for work and meetings etc. for years and I loved those exchanges with other passengers......awe stayed connected that way.......Now, when I go on the ferry, everyone is staring at their phones instead.....I can understand that many people feel bored or left out and their solution is to also get out their phone........Personally, I look out the windows and watch the boats and whales and scenery.
