What has always amazed me is the lack of interest and curiosity American and Canadians have about the history of the English language and the source of the words. If people knew the history of the words, as you explain here, they would know how to use it correctly. Maybe the obliviousness to the history of the words is at least partly the result of the language not being native to the Geographical reality.......I experienced that level of onomatopoeia in my Mother Tongue and then in the First Nations languages of the West Coast where I grew up.......

All language is rooted in Nature and in Human relations with Nature. I think my interest in the roots of language started when I recognized many English words had the same roots as Norwegian words and that led me to research and found the close connections of those cultures early on. Then when I studied French I saw more connections and then I noticed that the First Nations languages had adopted words for things and concepts that were introduced by the explorers and that I could tell from their language whether it was the French, English or Spanish they encountered at which period according to the words. I only regret that I didn't learn more languages in my youth........

Languages are going extinct now at an incredible rate.......the native speakers and anthropologists do have better equipment now......I have read the accounts from 1900 when they had to somehow record the languages with nothing but pen and paper and the ever changing symbols for sounds...........I'm a language geek, I know.........I'm just a big Geek in general......LOL

ET, I see loads of grammatical errors, especially in blogs, in chat, on FB. Many seem to not know the difference between: your, you're, they're, their, there, then there's its & it's, and last but not least: to & too... often misused!

How people use language has always been interesting to me. The words we use tell others a lot about our self- respect, so when I see continual misuse of our language in the blogs it stands out like a sore thumb. Especially since, nowadays, it takes only seconds to check on the internet.

I'll add another couple to your list...misuse of the words "then" and "than" and Doctor and Dr.

Of course, if people think they can read blank books...what can be expected of them?

It's an invasion of MY space.....
Words that speak like flying arrows
Into the heart of the matter
when what is meant, is not intent
and when intent, is not what's meant.

Getting behind it, never get out front
The correctness of correctability ( not a word, but I don't care).
The pat on the back, of truth tellers
,The slap in face for the ill informed.
Punishing the jaw breakers, will it ever cease.
Chewing actions of the Grammar Police

It seems their are alot of those hear,
They don't seem to learn from others, Who's purpose is to distract and degrade
Truth by correctable grammar and spelling.
Burning ears, of a burning heart

Conservative's reading of cant, shows conservative can't read.

You see meanings, are more about intent than about the exactness of the words

Misspelling an grammar usually doesn't mean a thing.....but some times it does.....You know what? That sometimes is always obvious.

Sometime it's not really a mistake, it's an intent..
for example............if I was to say.

U know what U cant do.. maybe you can understand it
But i am sure you'd understand ... if I said .....You know what youre can do, and you cunt do!
See how easy it is to figure it out, bad grammar and all. LOL

You know this blog is very interesting to me, ET. Thanks a lot!
I love all that enriches my knowledge. If I studied some English was just because I like this language. I'm sorry for never to have had the opportunity of practicing spoken English!

interesting blog. I admit that I am one of those who usually have mistakes in using grammar and sometimes singular to plural, present , past and future, but bear with me English is not my first language. I translate my English how it was written in Italian which my husband always corrected.

I am learning!, As long as you understand me, I am happy!

Hi Earthy: My keyboard won't allow me to type 'a lot' as one word, so it corrects it automatically to two words. The English language is complicated and even the rules for spelling and grammar don't always apply. I think to be good at spelling and grammar you have to be an avid reader. One thing that is irritating is when people use the words 'loose' and 'lose' wrong.

being stupid and acting stupid are two different things.

Thank you, for pointing out my intentional errors, that went too far beyond the scope of reason.

Being clear, concise and grammatically correct. is a terrific attribute.
a clear thought from an unclear idea, usually defines the point with a period.
I just never been given the surety of the ending that comes with it.

One of the anthropology courses I took in university was on the history and development of language. I wish that I'd kept that text book!

The subject is very interesting!!
