............ and his naysayers reside right here in his own country! They are asking, "What has he accomplished besides rhetoric?" IMHO, he has accomplished many world missions of good will and has gained the respect of many other world leaders. He has NOT thrown the weight of military might, and genuinely seeks world peace. He is NOT arrogant and was humbled by this honorable recognition. GO Obama!! |

Jan, the naysayers, instead of being proud for President Obama and our country as a whole, continue with their depressive rhetoric to tear down. Next, they'll be writing letters to the Nobel committee, protesting!

No ET, not ALL the naysayers are here in America. I was reading about his winning on the Yahoo news a little bit ago. Former winner and former Polish president Walesa has questioned the decision, saying it was too soon. And I quote this from the same article, ""I don't think Obama deserves this. I don't know who's making all these decisions. The prize should go to someone who has done something for peace and humanity," said Ahmad Shabir, 18-year-old student in Kabul. "Since he is the president, I don't see any change in U.S. strategy in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan." Of course, since the nominations are all turned in by Feb. 1, just two weeks after he took office, the prize was obviously given for the promises he made during his campaign, NOT for what he has actually accomplished. I base this on a statement, also taken from the same source.... and the caps are mine..... "Members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee said their choice could be seen as an EARLY vote of confidence in Obama intended to build global support for his policies. They lauded the change in global mood wrought by Obama's CALLS for peace and cooperation, and praised his PLEDGES to reduce the world stock of nuclear arms, ease American conflicts with Muslim nations and strengthen the U.S. role in combating climate change." I never paid too much attention to this prize, handed out by five people, but I guess it is a great honor to the recipients and to their country. Of course, the million dollars or so that is attached to the prize isn't too bad either. I just hope he recognizes that it is a call to him to start living up to all those promises that he made. I never knew this prize could ever be awarded based on promises from a presidential campaign. I thought recipients had to actually have done something to be nominated, much less to become the recipient.

The Nobel committee praised Obama's creation of "a new climate in international politics" and said he had returned multilateral diplomacy and institutions like the U.N. to the center of the world stage. French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who has made no secret of his admiration for Obama, called the decision the embodiment of the "return of America into the hearts of the people of the world." "He got the prize because he has been able to change the international climate," Nobel Committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland said. "Some people say, and I understand it, isn't it premature? Too early? Well, I'd say then that it could be too late to respond three years from now. It is now that we have the opportunity to respond — all of us." "You have to remember that the world has been in a pretty dangerous phase," Jagland said. "And anybody who can contribute to getting the world out of this situation deserves a Nobel Peace Prize. "Obama's election and foreign policy moves caused a dramatic improvement in the image of the U.S. around the world. A 25-nation poll of 27,000 people released in July by the Pew Global Attitudes Project found double-digit boosts to the percentage of people viewing the U.S. favorably in countries around the world. That indicator had plunged across the world under President George W. Bush. (from the AP - Karl titter and Matt Moore) We should be thanking President Obama for raising the world's opinion of us, not intent on bringing him down. GO Obama!!!!

"• Myth: The prize is awarded to recognize efforts for peace, human rights and democracy only after they have proven successful. More often, the prize is awarded to encourage those who receive it to see the effort through, sometimes at critical moments." We should all be happy...

Many of us felt our hopes raised that this world might become a better and safer place when Obama was elected That is why he is so popular by so many people around the world and one reason why he won the Peace prize. One day too, the naysayers might even see it. They have no idea how popular this man is and how lucky they are to have him. I suppose now that President Obama is donating his prize to charity, they will say he is doing it for the tax write off. Wouldn’t surprise me in the least.

Congratulations to President Obama. and every article i've seen states he is donating the prize to charity.
| ||
10/9/2009 1:45 pm |
Wow, IF he gives that 1.4 million to charity, that would be over 20 times what he has ever given in the past! Of course, he most likely will do it, not for the tax write-off (he has worked for putting limits on that anyway) but, because most of the American recipients in the past have and it would make him look bad to keep it. And the reason he won the peace prize was AS they stated, because of his PLEDGE.... not for anything he has done.
| ||
10/9/2009 2:03 pm |
I don't believe he deserves it, period. Promises, promises, promises, that's all he's good for, besides spending more and more taxpayer money.
| ||
10/9/2009 2:23 pm |
He gave it to charity, isn't that good enough???? Is he not allowed to do a good thing without negative criticism?

I saw on CNN today that the Gays and Lesbians are up in arms as he has done nothing to fulfill his promises to them. On the other hand there are many who complain he has too much on his plate and he should off load something. The poor man can't win for losing.

Obama said: "To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who've been honored by this prize, men and women who've inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace" I fully concur with his feelings.

Please tell me where I said he had done anything except raise our hopes for a safer and better world. I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, which is more than you seem to be able to do. I saw on CNN today that the Gays and Lesbians are up in arms as he has done nothing to fulfill his promises to them. On the other hand there are many who complain he has too much on his plate and he should off load something. The poor man can't win for losing. I just added another of my own comments.... and yes, I am willing to give him the benefit of doubt... lots of doubts, because that is what I have about the benefits that he offers us... DOUBTS. And I concur with your adjective of him... poor man. He was put into office, believing the things that he said, by forces that even he probably does not understand. Manchurian for sure... that is why I pray for his and his family's safety. "One love - one life time" from the Phantom of the Opera

He's in good company anyway. Arafat, Carter, Gore, all very accomplished individuals. Another curiosity. The nominations had to be in (ironically) about two weeks after he had taken office. Hope he had unpacked, cuz he sure hadn't done anything else worthwhile.....still hasn't. AZ If you can read this, thank a teacher. If it is in English, thank a Veteran

Nevertheless - he graciously and humbly accepted the award! Because he humbly and graciously accepts something that even he doesn't feel he deserves, then it's okay that he was awarded it and accepted it. Did I get that right?

I used to respect the winners of the Nobel Peace Prize, but haven't in a number of years for the following reasons: None of them are deserving. I can't help but wonder about the nomination coming so soon after his coronation, oops I mean inauguration how lon ghas he had this agenda? He's gotten around the world awfully fast in such a short amount of time telling everyone what a sorry country we hve , I mean that he's sorry we have such a sorry country...I mean he's sorry for us having such a rotten country...aww heck you know what I mean...he went around the world pretty fast making all these apologies for ALL of us. HOw long has he had this all planned? can this be done in such a short time? Now I have to understand how he can accept a peace prize and then go decided how many more troops to send into a war zone... I truly wish this wasnt' so tainted with all the other issues...I used to htink it was an acomplishment worth pursuing.. I love you ET man's heart away from nature becomes hard ~ standing bear~ or is that bare?

willy, I also used to think it was an honorable, if not coveted achievement. I am positive there are many more deserving people out there than the current awardee. Amazing what he did in just twelve damned days in office, isn't it? More to the picture than what we see, I believe.

Just another case for those who dis-like Obama to pick him apart for something he had no hand in..... REMEMBER, he did NOT nominate himself and certainly did not vote for himself on this Nobel Peace Prize award! We should ALL be proud that OUR President (in his short time in office) has improved the world's image of the U.S! I Hope You Dance - Lee Ann Womack

I don't think he deserved it because he hasn't done anything yet the warrants it. US soldiers are still in Iraq, he might be sending more to die in Afganistan, and the detention facilities at Gitmo are still open. But he can't be blamed for getting it or for accepting it.

Furthermore, I don't think the committee should have to explain their decision to Obama's naysayers. The vote was unanimous. World relations in these times should be, and is by many, a high priority.

what, he did that in 10 month? get real. Bush put you in the hole for a war you did not need to do, except to kill and maime people and then they should love you for it because they all died for your freedom of speech. I did not know until someone pointed it out americans are a sore bunch , not all, as long you have your religion and guns you are happy

There was a reason President Obama was nominated...we may never know exactly why - does it matter?....as apposed to our Aust. Prime Minister where one would have to dig deep to find anything that would embellish him for a nomination...let alone get one...Who really knows what the criteria is! A mind is like a parachute - it only works when its open
