Are you going to get a flu shot??

I listened to a very interesting segment on Public Radio yesterday regarding flu shots. The guest speaker was the head of a major medical institution that wanted to require it's staff to be inoculated. (I'm sorry I don't recall his name or the institution. I was driving and couldn't write it down.) He stated that 40% of the staff are refusing the shot, that they question its safety. The institution not only wants them to get the seasonal shot, but also the separate swine flu shot which is not yet available.

Are you planning to get the shots? Why or why not?

Personally, I have not had a flu shot in over 40 years, and I have never contacted the flu.
Yes, I will get the shots.
No, I have concerns about the shots.
I object to mandatory shots.

I envy those without autoimmune disorders. Their bodies are better prepared to fight off and/or they tend to have a mild case of the flu.

Yes, I will get the flu vaccine. My MD recommends it. Ben (who also is an MD) recommends it.

The positive is there. Sometimes it's just hard to find.

I do plan to get the regular flu shot. I have gotten one every year. I am exposed to a lot of people in my work. I do not plan to get the swine flu nostril spray. A member of my household is recovering from chemo and a bone marrow transplant and I am told the nostril spray is a live, but weakened vaccine which could potentially be dangerous to the young man.

Hi ET: I heard a warning for Canadians advising that those people who have a regular flu shot this year have a far greater chance of getting the swine flu. I'm not having either as I am allergic to latex and for some reason there is latex in the flu serum itself.

Yes I will get the shots. Last time I had the flu I was very sick! I can't afford to get that sick again as I am raising a couple of grandkids.

I got mine today, the very first time in my entire life! When I was working in the surgery I had a terrific immune system, built up over the years from being in contact with sickness. Now, Im not so sure what my immune system is. The Nurse said there is an anti-swine flu serum in the flu jab as well, and I might a slight dose of both in 48 hrs. Im waiting

I do not get them as I was allergic to eggs as a child and have never been allowed to get them...my DR recommends I do not even though I have no problem with eggs now he still states that the reaction could be much worse than the flu!

Absolutely I will get the flu shot, even if you get the flu (after the shot) it's much less severe and usually another kind of fly that was not covered in the cocktail received....The swine flu ,no...

I'm going to get both. I had the flu in January 2003 and have never been so sick in my life. I was so feverish I was out of my head with hallucinations. Bedridden for 9 days. Lost 16 pounds. Weak for three weeks. Yuck!

The one and only time I have ever been afflicted with a "flu bug" was in high school. I was 16 or 17 years old then. I am 69 years old now, and have never contacted "the flu" since. How does one account for THAT, never having had a flu shot??? I think my odds are good that my immunity is such that whatever good (or bad) a shot could conceivably do, I will ward off the damage. I have faith in the body's natural ability to ward off invasions when natural immunities are allowed to operate! Too many people rely on the "miracle of modern medicine." Not me!! I have a healthy distrust of it. It is such a huge MARKET!!

At my age, I rarely as much as trust aspirin ... or any over-the-counter drug - let alone prescribed meds!

How is it that we in these here United States are the most highly medicated society in the world??? Will someone please explain that to me???? And at the highest of costs????

We, unique to the rest of the world, are inundated with meds for this and meds for that via the media. How commercial have we become to remain "healthy"????

When I went in for my physical a few weeks ago, the doc came in with a nurse with a syringe and he said, "Here is your ANNUAL flu shot." I get one every year and haven't had the flu since 1970, or thereabouts.

People apparently listen to their "providers" ... in my estimation, a major sales pitch.

I have to add that the one and only time in my life I have ever had the flu was in high school. What was I? 16 or 17 years old? I am 69 years old now and have not had the flu since. How can this be when I have never had a flu shot? I guess I have to attribute it to my natural immune system, one that is permitted to function by nature's way and without "the miracle of modern medicine's" intervention.

I happen to think this whole flu thingy - every year - is a major sales job by med producers.

I am required to get a flu shot because I do volunteer work at a hospital.

I think if it is made mandetory by an employer, then the employer should also pay for it.

I think its wise for us senior folks to get our annual flu shot, but I'm not sure I would agree to having it required for everyone.

The flu shot is a crapshoot. The CDC only predicts accurately which strain will become prevalent 40% of the time. I never got the flu shot in years past, hence I have immunity to most strains of flu becasue I had them. I will not take the seasnonal shot. H1N1 is a different story. Since none of us have immunity if I were going to take a shot I'd take that one.

EarthyTaurus,

I'm not going to get a flu shot because my doctor told me that the flu shots contain toxic substances, such as formaldehyde. I have not had a flu shot in many years, and I never got the flu.

The other issue, besides safety, is the fact that the flu shot will only protect people against one strain of the flu, and medical practitioners are never sure which strain will be the most prevalent in any given year. So, a lot of people who opt to get a flu shot might be protecting themselves from nothing.

Furthermore, it is rumored that this year's flu shot will protect people from the swine flu, and so far there is no concrete evidence that there will be many cases of that strain of flu.

I celebrate myself today. I am alive and growing. I will strive to be the best I can be each and every day.

Genie1moose makes a very valid point in that the flu shot only protects against one strain of the flu. With that said, those who get the flu after the shot either became infected with that particular strain of flu just prior to getting the shot or else they acquired a strain of the flu that the shot wouldn't have protected them against.

Yes...I am getting the flu shot. And the swine flu shot, as well. A few years ago, I did not get the flu shot, ended up getting the strain that the flu shot was meant to immunize against, and spent an entire week in the hospital sicker than I've ever been in my entire life...and I was one of the lucky ones according to my doc. So I will never again risk getting that sick. It was awful, and I don't even remember my first few days in the hospital, as I was so out of it. Blecccccchhhhhh.

I have always been told if you have a slight infection or fever in your body the flu shot will bring on the flu. I have seen folks take the flu shot and become deathly sick and pass out on site.

All the data from the ongoing clinical trials of the 2009 H1N1 vaccine indicate it is just as safe as the regular seasonal flu. This was expected, since the 2009 H1N1 vaccine is made in exactly the same way as the seasonal flu vaccine.

It will be interesting to repost this blog after the flu season and then ask of those who received the shot what happened and to those who did not get the shot - the same question. Flu or not?

I'm not getting the shot. I do wash my hand a lot and use the hand sterilizer frequentely, try to keep the work area clean by wiping down the desk, chairs where people sit and touch. Last year I caught a bad cold but not the flu. I'm exposed to lots of adults but not directly with children. We at work are encouraged and practically directed to STAY HOME if sick. Stock up our homes with supplies in case of getting sick.

All take care.

The Center for Disease Control has an excellent article about flu shots. G**gle it for more information. The article states that it is impossible to contract the flu from the shot itself, as the vaccine is a killed virus and it, therefore, cannot "give" anyone the flu for which the innoculation is intended. The shot does, however, prevent a particular strain of flu, one which is much more serious than "normal" types of flu.

Be thankful if you've never contracted the particular strain of the season. It's a much more serious respiratory ailment then "regular" flu. Vast difference, in fact. To reiterate from my previous comment above, after not receiving the flu shot one year, I contracted that strain...it almost killed me.

And for those at a greater risk (healthwise) prior to being vaccinated, the importance of a flu shot cannot be stressed enough, IMO. I'll get off of my soapbox now...and also stay out of intensive care, too.

myself and my daughter and two grandkids all get the regular flu shot,, have done for years and don't get sick. Not sure about the H1N1 but my daughter's boss is suggesting they all get one as they work in a dental office. Does not matter here who suggests the shots as we don't have to pay for them anyway.

ET, the older generation in Ireland are kept alive on meds. theres meds for everything. In the old days people just died from old age or such, now they're not allowed to die, - dont know why. If an old person has no quality of life and is being kept alive on medications, then I feel thats totally wrong. I was sick last year and thought I was dying!!!! Not yet! Before that, I have never been ill.

No, no, and double NO. Will not take the flu shot. Will not take the swine flu shot either. What will be, will be. I do not want live, although diluted, bugs in my body. I much prefer holistic methods and that bottle of hand sanitizer.

I've never had a "flu shot" in the past... and don't expect to do so in the future....

I believe that our bodies are imbued with a fine immune system which does a great job. I'm not about to compromise mine, now..... We've got immune systems.... let 'em work!!!!!

I already got my regular flu shot a week ago. I will get the swine flu shot around the middle of October. My physicians suggest I get both flu shots.

I have never had a flu shot because it really does not prevent you from getting the flu only a milder shorter version of it, at least that is my understanding of it. I can probably count on one hand how many times I have had the flu in my life so save the shot for someone who really wants it or needs it. I do object strongly to mandatory anything and that includes unwanted vaccaines floating around in MY body.
