The VFW puts flags on the graves of ALL veterans, whether they died while in service or later. Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

Maybe I should have said "in our area"? On Memorial Day, I know my dad and uncle have flags on their graves, and they did not die while in the service. There are flags all over the cemetary and they are placed there by the local chapter of the VFW. Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

Originally known as Decoration Day was celebrated on May 5th each year but only by the Northern States. The Southern States celebrated on separate days until after WWI. The Northern States changed the date to May 30th in 1868. During WWI, Decoration Day evolved into Memorial Day to commemorate all American military personnel who died in all wars. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 changed the date to the last Monday in May, also making it a Federal Holiday. It went into effect in 1971.
