Hi Dan: That looting was appalling to see. They used that shooting incident as an excuse to get what they wanted and not pay for it, and also to say 'screw you' to the store owner and to society. I hope the police are busy analyzing all the looted stores' surveillance cameras and arrest the looters.

Looters will use practically any excuse to break in and take what they want. It is pathetic!!

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

I don't think any party can excuse the after dark mayhem and looting.

....and not having a male in the home is also not the cause, or this kind of rioting would have been prevalent while all the men were away fighting WWII.

Unfortunately these ne'er do wells are getting away with it, and so will continue to exhibit this type of behaviour.

I thought the comments below might offer some insight to the looting mindset ~

Prof John Pitts, a UK criminologist is of the view looting makes "powerless people suddenly feel powerful" and that is "very intoxicating". That riots are complex events and cannot be explained away as "just thuggery".

Also, a social psychologist's view on looting ~

'For most people looting is opportunistic. And greed is certainly a factor. But some people approach this situation not necessarily with bad intentions. They are swept away by the crowd, for a variety of reasons highlighted by social psychologists. One concept is called de-individuation. Normally people's behaviour is guided by their own identity and values, which tell us to not do certain things - like taking things without paying for them. But in some situations they take on the values of the group. Our own internal values and norms become less salient. The second idea is called emergent norm theory. Most of these people have probably not been in a riot like this one before. They are unsure of what the appropriate behaviour is. So they look at what other people are doing. And if other people are doing this, it suggests it's normal. Or at least maybe it is something that I can get away with.'
